Baseball Doesn't stop in June For The Hurricanes

UM’S PEREZ AND JAY CONTRIBUTING ON USA NATIONAL TEAM
TOKYO – Hurricane leftfielder Jon Jay (Miami, Fla.) and relief pitcher Chris Perez (Holmes Beach, Fla.) are spending their summer as members of the U.S. National Baseball Team, which wrapped up a four-game series with Japan in Tokyo on July 12.
Jay leads the team with seven runs scored and is hitting .318 in the third spot in the batting order. After dropping the first three games of the series, Team USA posted a 13-2 win in the series finale. Jay went 2-fo-3 with three runs scored, two walks and a double.
Perez has played a major role in two of the team’s wins. He picked up a save in a 3-1 win against Torrington of the Northeastern Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) on July 2, with three strikeouts in the ninth inning. Perez earned a victory in USA’s 7-6 win against the Newport Gulls on July 4 in Newport, R.I., pitching the final 1.2 innings with two strikeouts and a walk. He was charged with the loss in a 3-1 decision against Japan on July 9 in Kamano, giving up two unearned runs in the eighth inning.
Altogether Perez has made three appearances and is 1-1 with a save and a 0.00 ERA in 3.2 innings. He has struck out five of the 11 batters he has faced and is holding opponents to a .091 batting average.
Team USA is 4-3 overall and returns to action on July 15 against Chinese Taipei in Taipei, Taiwan. The game begins at 5:30 a.m. and is available on Gametracker at www.usabaseball.com.
THREE HURRICANES STAR IN VIRGINIA VALLEY LEAGUE ALL-STAR GAME
WINCHESTER, Va. (July 10) – Miami redshirt freshman pitcher Michael Sanders and juniors catcher Eddy Rodriguez and senior relief pitcher Andrew Lane were all chosen to participate in the Virginia Valley League’s All-Star Game at Bridgeforth Field. Sanders played on the Souther Division All-Stars, which defeated Rodriguez’s and Lane’s Northern Division All-Stars, 4-2.
Sanders, who pitches for the Covington Lumberjacks, started for the Southern Division and pitched one scoreless inning with a walk and a strikeout. Rodriguez, who represented the Luray Wranglers, went 1-for-3 as the Northern Division’s starting catcher and threw our base runners to end the first and third innings.
Lane, who also plays for Luray, was charged with the loss after giving up three runs in the seventh inning.

50th Edition of Jewish Sports Review Names Jewish All America Baseball Team
New York, July 12, 2005 – The team is headed by former Miami third baseman Ryan Braun (hometown Granada Hills, CA), who was selected in the first round, #5 overall in the MLB draft by the Milwaukee Brewers. Braun hit .388 and led the ACC with 18 homers, 76 RBIs, and a .726 slugging percentage. (He was the ACC Player of the Year). Along with Justin Wayne (#5 overall in 2000), he was the highest Jewish draft pick since the Phillies selected Mike Lieberthal as #3 overall in 1990.
