Postgame Quotes - Mississippi St. 13, FAU 2

June 3, 2005

Mississippi State

Head Coach Ron Polk:
“We got through [the heat], beat a nice ball club. I don’t think the hitters wanted to get back on the bus. They want to stay here because the ball jumps out of this ballpark.”

“Alan Johnson pitched well. He shut them down. Brad Corley’s two homeruns were the key. He was the hero in the early part of the ball game and he extended the lead a little bit.”

“We have a game tomorrow. I hope that the humidity lightens up a little bit because our boys are sapped right now. But for AJ to got 105 pitches is really a testament to his condition and the fact that he doesn’t have any body fat.”

On Miami:
“I don’t know how good [Cesar Carrillo] his numbers are certainly good and I’m sure he’s tough hombre but we’ve faced a lot of good pitchers in the Southeastern Conference. I think that our conference might have better pitching than the ACC top-to-bottom.”

Pitcher Alan Johnson:
On his stamina:
“It wasn’t too bad. I drank a lot of fluids last night and this morning. I know it looked like I might have been pretty tired but if coach needed me to pitch a 10th inning, I could have done it. Physically I feel like I’m in the best shape since I’ve been here.”

“I didn’t throw up too many changeups or curve balls, so I guess I just located my fast ball. They were hitting pop-ups and I got the occasional strike outs and that is what you need as a pitcher.”

Right Fielder Brad Corley:
On his first Homerun:
“My first at bat there were runners on second and third, the pitcher was struggling. I looked down at coach Polk and he said if it’s there, hit it and it was the first pitch fast ball right down the middle and I just tried to square it up.”

Florida Atlantic

Head Coach Kevin Cooney:
On Brad Corley’s First homerun:
“Chris had good stuff but he just didn’t have good location. When you have to come middle all the time it’s always going to hurt you. We had to come to the middle with [Brad] Corley. The first homerun was after two walks, so you have to throw a strike there. He turned on it and got it up into the win and there was no question about that.”

On Brad Corley’s Second homerun:
“The second at-bat we were trying to go changeup and that didn’t work. So we really didn’t solve the problem. Chris didn’t really get the ball where we wanted to get it.”

On Tomorrow:
“We are going to wait and see what happens tonight and sit down with our coaches and evaluate what we have to do next. We really don’t have anything to lose. Nobody really expected us to be here. If there is any kind of gamble that we could take by playing somebody or not playing somebody, there is no reason to worry about a gamble at this point because we are playing with house money.”

Pitcher Chris Salberg:
“In his first at-bat he hit a fastball for a homerun and then we started him off with a changeup on the outer half and he pulled it.”

On the Rough Start:
“I’ve struggle in the first inning all year so it wasn’t tough; I just tried to battle back.”

Left Fielder Jonathan Shapland:
On Facing Alan Johnson:
“I didn’t think that he was very overpowering. He was mixing his pitches up pretty well. He just kept getting ahead of all the hitters and we were taking weak swings.”
