Miami Falls To NC State in ACC Tourney

JACKSONVILLE, FL.(AP) – North Carolina State freshman right handerAndrew Brackman and reliever Joey Devine combined to hold eighth-rankedMiami to six hits as the Wolfpack posted the first upset of the AtlanticCoast Conference Tournament with a 2-1 win Wednesday at the BaseballGrounds of Jacksonville.

Brackman, a 6-foot-10 freshman who started 14 games for North CarolinaState’s basketball team this year, went seven innings and allowed thesix hits while striking out five. Brackman, who didn’t join the baseballsquad until late March, hiked his record to 4-0 after pitching a totalof 32 innings in five previous starts this year.

He allowed Miami’s lone run on two hits in the fifth inning, andescaped a Hurricanes threat in the sixth by getting Danny Valencia toline to short with runners at second and third.

Devine came on in the eighth inning and retired all six batters hefaced to earn his 12th save of the year.

The Wolfpack jumped on Miami starter Cesar Carrillo (12-2) for theironly runs in the first inning. Aaron Bates and Aaron Cone drewsuccessive two-out walks and Brian Aragon brought both runners home whenhe lined a double into the gap that barely eluded Danny Figuerora’sdiving attempt. Carrillo and three relievers shutout the Wolfpack onfive hits the final eight innings.

North Carolina State (40-15) moved into the winner’s bracket onThursday where it will meet the winner of this afternoon’sClemson-Virginia game. Miami (38-16-1) will meet the loser of that gamein Thursday’s opening game.
