May 21, 2005
CLEMSON, S.C. – A five-run sixth inning was too much to overcome for Miami in a 6-2 loss to Clemson in front of 5,085 at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Miami (38-15-1 overall, 19-10-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) lost its fourth straight game and were swept for the first time in a three-game series since dropping three to Florida State, April 12-14, 2002.
Ricky Orta (6-5) went five-plus innings for the `Canes and gave up four runs on six hits with a strikeout and a walk in the loss.
Robert Rohrbaugh went five and two-thirds innings for the Tigers in a no-decision, giving up five hits and two earned runs with three walks and three strikeouts. Drew Fiorenza picked up the win with an inning and a third of scoreless relief with two walks and a strikeout.
Paco Figueroa was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Roger Tomas went 2-for-3 to lead Miami. Taylor Harbin tied a Clemson record with three doubles and drove in a run, while Kris Harvey went 2-for-4 to lead the Tigers.
Walter Diaz led off the Miami third with a double to right field and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Danny Figueroa. Diaz was able to score when Harbin one-hopped a throw from second base to home on a ground ball hit by Paco Figueroa, giving Miami a 1-0 lead.
The `Canes added another run in the fifth on a single from Ryan Braun that scored Paco Figueroa from second base.
Orta moved through the Clemson lineup efficiently until the sixth inning. Herman Demmink led off the inning with a double down the right field line and moved to third on a bunt single by Brad Chalk to put runners at the corners with no outs. Taylor Harbin hit his second double of the game to left field to drive in Demmink and cut the UM lead in half, 2-1. Clemson took the lead on a three-run shot from Tyler Colvin to deep right.
Colvin’s home run gave Clemson a 4-2 lead and spelled the end for Orta, who gave way to Danny Gil. Gil gave up a single to Kris Harvey and walked Travis Storrer and Andy D’Alessio to load the bases, still with no outs, before he was spelled by Jon McLean. McLean struck out Stan Widmann and gave way to Andrew Lane. Pinch-hitter Ben Hall’s ground ball forced out D’Alessio at second, but scored Harvey for a 5-2 lead. Demmink ended the inning, lining out to center.
Lane walked Chalk to lead off the seventh and was replaced by Chris Perez. Perez gave up Harbin’s third double of the day, struck out Colvin and gave up an RBI single to Harvey, putting the score at 6-2.
Miami will await the outcome of Saturday’s ACC contests to see who it plays next in the first round of the ACC Tournament in Jacksonville on Wednesday, May 25.
