Miami's Carrillo Named Semi-Finalist For Clemens Award

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – University of Miami junior right-handed pitcher Cesar Carrillo has been named one of 10 semi-finalists for the Second Annual Roger Clemens Award, given to college baseball’s top pitcher.

Carrillo is 12-1 this season with a 2.27 ERA and leads the Atlantic Coast Conference with 106 strikeouts against 17 walks in 103.0 innings pitched this season. He is 24-1 for his career, his first loss coming May 19 at Clemson. Carrillo ran off 24 straight wins to start his college career, establishing a UM record and ranking fourth all-time in the NCAA annals.

He will be joined by Ricky Romero of Cal State Fullerton, Tulane lefthander Brian Bogusevic, righthander Dallas Buck of Oregon State, Mike Pelfrey of Wichta State, righthander Lance Broadway of TCU, righthander Luke Hochevar of Tennessee, righthander Ian Kennedy of USC, lefthander Cesar Ramos of Long Beach State and righthander Max Scherzer of Missouri.

The 10 were selected in an initial round of voting by all Division I head baseball coaches, a selection of national college baseball media, the16 winners of the R. E. Bob Smith Award and the three finalists from the first Clemens Award. The second round of voting to select the three finalists will run from May 24-June 2, with the results announced on June 3. The winner of the second Roger Clemens Award, will be announced on Thursday, July 14 at the Marriott Westchase Hotel in Houston.
