Miami Falls Behind Early In 11-9 Loss To Maryland

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – The fourth-ranked Miami Hurricanes fell behind early and gave up 15 hits in a 11-9 loss to Maryland in front of 1,827 at Mark Light Field Sunday afternoon. Miami dropped to 33-11-1 overall and 17-6-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Terps scored 10 runs in the first five innings and improved to 21-26 overall and 7-20 in the ACC.

Miami starter Ricky Orta (6-4) went two-plus innings and gave up seven earned runs on seven hits with a walk and a strikeout to the take the loss. Hurricane third baseman Ryan Braun hit a home run for the third consecutive game and Eddy Rodriguez drove in three runs for Miami.

Maryland starter Chris Clem (2-6) went six and one third innings and gave up six runs, four earned, on eight hits with two walks and a strikeout for the win.Will Frazier and Chad Durakis both collected three hits and three-run home runs in the game.

Maryland took advantage of a 15 mph wind blowing out to left-center with Durakis’ and Frazier’s three-run shots in the first and second innings. Durakis followed a pair of first-inning singles by Frazier and Truan Mehl with his second homer of the season, just inside the left-field foul pole for a quick 3-0 lead. The Hurricanes answered with a RBI-single from Jon Jay to cut the lead to 3-1.

Frazier gave the Terps a 6-1 lead with a three-run four-bagger in the second to center field. Joe Palumbo pushed the lead to 8-1 with a two-run single in the third.

Rodriguez hit a two-run double to center in the fourth inning that scored Walter Diaz and Roger Tomas to put the score at 8-3. Bobby Ryan added to the Maryland lead in the fifth with single up the middle to score Matt Maropis.

Braun inched the Hurricanes closer in the seventh inning with a two-run home run to knock Clem out of the game. Jay scored on that homer and went three-for-five scoring two runs on the day.

Patrick Feeney led off the bottom of the ninth with a triple and scored on Figueroa’s single. The `Canes scored two more runs, but the rally fell short.

Dan Touchet gave up three runs, one earned, on four hits in four innings with two walks and two strikeouts. Andrew Lane threw two innings giving up one run off two hits.

Justin Hulse gave up two runs on two hits in one and two thirds innings of work.

Miami returns to action on Friday, May 6 at Mark Light Field with the first of a three-game series against Jacksonville. It is the final regular-season home series for the Hurricanes.

Notes: Paco Figueroa sat out the game as a precautionary measure after sustaining a hamstring injury in Saturday night’s game… Braun’s home run was his 41st of his career and moves him into sole possession of fifth place in UM history.
