No. 5 Plays Host To No. 17 ACC Rival Florida State Friday
April 21, 2005
CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – The 2005 edition of the Miami-Florida State rivalry carries with it all the intensity and tradition accrued in the last 240 games and 54 years of the all-time series between the schools, plus the added dimension of Atlantic Coast Conference competition. It’s a formula that has already sold out Friday night’s `Canes-‘Noles series opener at 7 p.m. at Mark Light Field, and has left only a handful of tickets available for Saturday’s 7 p.m. tilt and Sunday’s 1 p.m. series finale.
All three games can be seen on the Sun Sports Network and will be carried on local radio. UM’s flagship, WQAM 560 AM, will broadcast Saturday’s game and will air Sunday’s game on WKAT (1360 AM). All three games can be heard in Spanish on WNMA 1210 AM (Friday) and WSUA 1260 AM (Saturday and Sunday.)The Student Voice of Miami, WVUM, 90.5 FM, will broadcast all three games.
Miami (29-9-1, 13-4-1 ACC) has regrouped from a midseason funk and is riding a six-game unbeaten streak in ACC play, going 5-0-1 at Virginia Tech and North Carolina in the last two weeks. The Hurricanes, ranked fifth in the latest ESPN/Sports Weekly Coaches Poll, are currently second in the ACC, two-and-a-half games behind Georgia Tech (16-2). UM is batting .356 in the six-game surge and has outscored opponents, on average, 13-6. Florida State (34-11, 9-6 ACC) is in fifth place in the conference and is coming off a 4-2 win against No. 7 Florida on Tuesday in Tallahassee.
Friday’s game matches Miami’s undefeated hurler Cesar Carrillo (9-0, 1.30 ERA) against FSU’s Mark Sauls (4-1, 3.27 ERA). Carrillo is looking for career win No. 22 against zero losses. He leads the NCAA with nine wins and is currently sixth in the NCAA all-time record book for consecutive decisions won.
Southpaws Brandon Camardese (4-0, 5.45 ERA) and Barret Browning (3-1, 2.39 ERA) take the mound Saturday night and UM’s Ricky Orta (6-2, 4.24 ERA) and FSU’s Bryan Henry (3-2, 1.95 ERA) get the nod in the series finale.
The series features two of college baseball’s most dangerous leadoff men in UM’s Danny Figueroa and FSU’s Shane Robinson. Figueroa is batting .331 for the season but is batting .520 in the game’s first at-bat with two home runs and 19 runs scored. Robinson tallied up a 40-game hitting streak earlier this season and ranks ninth in the NCAA with a .444 average and is 10th with 34 stolen bases in 37 attempts.
As a whole, the Miami hitters are batting .340, led by Jon Jay’s .453 average (fifth in the NCAA). Hurricane third baseman Ryan Braun leads the team with 11 home runs and is ranked among the NCAA leaders in RBIs per game (1.53/7th), average (.426/21) and runs per game (1.58/3rd).
The Hurricane lineup ranks fourth in the NCAA in hitting and spurs on on the nation’s No. 6 offense with 9.7 runs per game. UM passed its toughest test of the season last week against North Carolina, putting up 42 runs on the nation’s best pitching staff in three games.

The first 3,000 fans to pass through the gates on Friday night will receive an intricately-detailed replica of Mark Light Field, courtesy of The Pharmed Group and Chispa’s Restaurant.
THE MIAMI-FSU SERIES
The Seminoles have been Miami’s most common opponent over the last 54 years and have been one of the few teams the Hurricanes have a losing record against. FSU leads the 240-game all-time series, 127-109-4. Although the teams will still play each other three times a year in the ACC, gone are the days of the home-and-home series the teams used to play. UM took won four of the six meetings last year, including two-of-three at Mark Light Field.
UM holds a slight 56-52-3 edge at the Light, but trails in games at Tallahassee, 51-71-1. The Hurricanes were 4-2 against the `Noles last year and both teams have many of the key players in that series gracing their rosters this year.
4/9/04 – FSU 6, UM 5 – Ryan Braun cracked two home runs in a losing effort.
4/10/04 – UM 17, FSU 11 – Cesar Carrillo picked up the win and Paco Figueroa led UM with three hits, four runs and three RBIs. Jon Jay and Braun added two hits apiece.
4/11/04 – UM 4, FSU 0 – Brandon Camardese pitched 6.2 innings of a two-hit shutout and Paco Figueroa aided his cause with two RBIs.
4/16/04 – UM 10, FSU 0 – Jay went 3-for-4 and Vince Bongiovanni pitched two innings of scoreless relief.
4/17/04 – UM 7 FSU 3 – Carrillo picked up another win and Roger Tomas had two hits to help Jim Morris usher in his 500th career win with Miami.
4/18/04 – FSU 10, UM 0 – Camardese lost his first outing of the season and Tomas hit a RBI double.
LAST WEEK
#6 Miami 17, #7 North Carolina 7 – April 15, 2005 – Alex Garabedian drove in a career-high five runs and Danny Figueroa went 3 for 5 to lead the Hurricanes The projected pitcher’s duel between Miami’s Cesar Carrillo and North Carolina’s Andrew Miller turned into an offensive outburst complemented by defensive miscues. The two teams combined for 19 hits, 16 walks and seven errors. Miami scored 10 runs on only five hits in the first three innings. Carrillo recovered from a shaky first inning to improve his record to 9-0 this season and 21-0 all-time. Freshman Manny Miguelez picked up his first career save, pitching three innings of relief and striking out four.
#6 Miami 18, #7 North Carolina 9 – April 16, 2005 – Ryan Braun’s two-run home run in the seventh broke open a tie game and helped carry Miami to a 18-9 victory in front of a capacity crowd of 2. Andrew Lane and sophomore closer Chris Perez pitched four and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief. Lane improved his record to 2-0 and tied a career high with three innings pitched and struck out three, while giving up only three hits. Perez picked up his first save of the season with a one and two-thirds of work without allowing a hit and striking out two. Jon Jay was 3 for 6 with five RBIs and Braun was 2 for 4 with four RBIs to lead a 17-hit attack.
#6 Miami 7, #7 North Carolina 7 – April 17, 2005 – A predetermined game curfew due to Miami’s travel schedule left at a 7-7 tie. UM’s Danny Figueroa scored the game-tying run on an error in the ninth inning. Ryan Braun went 2 for 4 with two RBIs to lead Miami. Matt Ellington hit his seventh home run of the season and was 3 for 5 on the day for North Carolina. Miami sophomore Chris Perez pitched three innings of scoreless relief and did not allow any hits in the no-decision. UNC’s Matt Danford threw six and one-third innings of relief and allowed three runs on six hits, one walk and four strike outs.
THIS AND THAT FROM LAST WEEK…
Friday… Carrillo’s win tied him with Ken Smith (West Virginia, 1986-87) and Tony Arnold (Texas, 1979, ’81) for sixth on the NCAA consecutive decisions won list. It was the most runs scored against North Carolina since a 19-5 loss to Georgia Tech on May 12, 2001… Carrillo’s three walks were a season high… Miami is now 30-0 all-time when Carrillo pitches… Garabedian started in place of Brendan Katin, who was injured in practice on Thursday night… Saturday… Braun’s home run was the 38th of his career, tying him with Charles Johnson for eighth on the school’s all-time list… Sunday… Braun’s first-inning RBI was the 174th of his career, tying him with Jim Burt (2001-04) for eighth on the all-time list at Miami… UNC’s back-to-back home runs in the third were the first allowed by the Hurricanes since Nick Rogers and Ryan Barthelemy of Florida State went yard in consecutive at-bats on April 13, 2002… It was the first tie for Miami since a 7-7 draw with Florida State on April 20, 2004.
GARABEDIAN TABBED ACC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Freshman catcher/designated hitter Alex Garabedian was named Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Player of the Week by the conference office Monday. It is the second straight week that a Hurricane has garnered the honor. Garabedian led Miami to a 2-0-1 record against North Carolina last weekend, hitting .700 over the three-game span. He scored six runs, drove in seven, recorded a .786 on-base percentage and 1.200 slugging percentage. He broke open a 17-7 win against the Tar Heels last Friday, April 15, with a three-run blast in the second inning that reclaimed the lead for the Hurricanes. Later in the game, he recorded an additional two runs batted in to set a career high with five RBIs. Garabedian kept the Hurricanes in the game in Sunday’s 7-7 tie with a run and an RBI on 2-for-3 hitting with his first career triple. He improved his average from .261 to .304 over the weekend and increased his season totals to three home runs and 25 RBIs.
Senior Brendan Katin earned the award the week prior to Garabedian’s accolade for his performance in a three-game sweep at Virginia Tech.
30/30
As in 30 career appearances by Hurricane ace Cesar Carrillo and 30 wins for the Hurricanes. The Hurricanes and Carrillo moved to 30-0 all-time when he pitches with a 17-7 win against North Carolina on April 15. Although it was not Carrillo’s best performance (seven hits, five runs and one strike out in six innings), the `Canes had his back at the plate and put up enough runs to keep the streak alive.
21/21
As in 21 career wins in 21 career decisions for Carrillo. Carrillo’s record is 9-0 this season with a 1.30 ERA and his career mark is now 21-0. He set a Miami record for consecutive decisions won and most wins without a loss to start a career with a 1-0 complete game shutout of Oral Roberts on March 31. The previous record of 18 consecutive decisions won was held by Jerry Brust (1974-75), who finished his career at Miami 18-0. The Hurricanes have outscored their opponents 94-23 when Carrillo pitches this season and 87-18 when he starts.
WHERE THE STREAK STANDS
Carrillo’s win against Oral Roberts on March 31 ran his career record to 19-0 and surpassed Jerry Brust (1974-75) for the most consecutive decisions won and best start to a career at the University of Miami. His win against North Carolina on April 15 ran his career record to 21-0. The win tied Carrillo with Ken Smith (West Virginia, 1986-87) and Tony Arnold (Texas, 1979, ’81). However, Carrillo has a ways to go to reach the NCAA mark of 26 consecutive decisions won, held by Wake Forest’s Kyle Sleeth (2001-2003), BYU’s Scott Nielson (1978, ’82-83) and current Emory University (Division III) senior Will Tyler. Tyler’s streak ended at 26 games in a 6-4 loss to Brandeis University March 15 in Sanford, Fla.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS
Miami has scored more runs in the first inning (70) than in any other inning this season. The Hurricanes have put at least one run on the board in the first inning in 32 games and are 27-4-1 when doing so. Nearly 19 percent of UM’s 377 runs this season have come in the first inning. The `Canes next-best inning is the fifth, with 48 runs. Miami has outscored its opponents 45-10 in the seventh inning.
THE CATALYST
Danny Figueroa has led off for the Hurricanes in all 36 games he has played this season and has done his job well. He has not only reached base 25 out of those 36 games, but has crossed the plate 19 times to start the scoring for Miami. Figueroa has reached base on eight singles, three doubles, nine walks, one error, two hit-by-pitches and two home runs. The team is 18-6-1 when he reaches base in the leadoff spot and 16-3-1 when he scores from that position in the first inning. He is hitting .520 in the games’ first at-bat.
BULLSEYE
Junior Danny Figueroa set one of the more painful Miami records by becoming the first Hurricane to be hit by a pitch twice in an inning in the first inning of the 20-1 win against Georgia Tech on March 25. Although that was a Hurricane first, being plunked is not uncommon for Figueroa. He is only three close pitches away from tying the school record for being hit by a pitch in a career. He was hit for the 29th time in his career in the ninth inning of Miami’s 7-7 tie against North Carolina on April 17 and eventually scored the game’s tying run. His brother, Paco, is the only current Hurricane to join him on the all-time list.

WATCH OUT FOR BIG BROTHER
Danny Figueroa is a tough act to follow, but his older (by a couple minutes) brother, Paco, has been up to the task. Paco hits second behind Danny in the Miami order and is putting up career numbers this season. He has already established single-season career highs for at-bats (153), runs (53), hits (54), doubles (11), triples (four), walks (23) and stolen bases (19). He’s within striking distance of setting career highs for home runs and needs only one more to match the season total in each of his first three years at Miami. In addition to his stellar play at the plate, he has played center field, right field and second base and his having one of his best seasons in the field. Below is a comparison of Paco’s year-by-year totals and his totals 39 games into this season.

HERE’S THE DIFFERENCE
Danny and Paco Figueroa have played virtually their entire baseball careers together. They are identical twins and the untrained eye wouldn’t be at fault if it confused the two. Danny hits in the leadoff spot and is followed Paco. While Paco is a second baseman, he has been playing in right field, next to Danny in center, and even filled in when Danny was hampered by an early-season injury. Their statistics are even similar: Danny is batting .331 with four home runs and 23 RBIs, while Paco is hitting .353 with two home runs and 24 RBIs. At least one of the twins has had a hit in 33 of the 34 games both have played in. Thankfully, the rules of baseball require them to wear different numbers so outsiders can decipher between the two. Paco wears No. 16, Danny wears No. 2.
1-2 PUNCH IN THE 3-4 Sophomore left fielder Jon Jay and junior third baseman Ryan Braun have formed a formidable and interchangeable offensive charge hitting in the 3 and 4 spot for the Hurricanes this season. Jay has batted in the cleanup spot 27 times, while Braun has been no. 4 in the order five times. Jay leads the team in hitting (.453) and on-base percentage (.541) and is third on the team with 43 RBIs. Braun is second on the team with a .426 average, nine doubles and leads the team with 57 runs, 11 home runs, 55 RBIs and a .765 slugging percentage. Both Jay and Braun have had hits in 27 of the team’s 39 games.
Miami is one of only two lineups in the NCAA to have two student-athletes ranked in the nation’s top 25 in batting average. Braun’s.426 average ranks 21st in the NCAA and Jay’s.453 is the fifth-highest average. The College of Charleston is the only other team with two batters ranked among the nation’s top-25 hitters. Brett Gardner (.452) is ranked sixth in the country and D.J. Wabick’s .426 is 22nd in the country.
TALENT TRANSFERRABLE
The Hurricanes knew they were getting a talented player when Danny Valencia transferred to Miami after a stellar freshman season at UNC-Greensboro. The sophomore first baseman hit .338 and led UNCG with eight home runs, 16 doubles and 117 total bases on his way to earning Southern Conference Freshman of the Year and second-team all-conference honors. But Valencia’s smooth transition and performance thus far has been better than anticipated. Through 39 games, Valencia’s numbers at the plate compare favorably to the impressive freshman season he had at Greensboro. He is batting .324 with a team-leading 13 doubles, three home runs and 44 RBIs. Valencia played a part in all three Miami runs in a 3-0 win against Pittsburgh on March 8 with two RBIs and a run scored. He had arguably the best game of his career against Virginia Tech on April 9, going 5-6 with two triples, a double and eight RBIs. He has two four-hit games this season, against Rutgers on March 18 and George Washington on Feb. 27. Below is a comparison of Valencia’s freshman and sophomore seasons:

YOUNG BUCK
Freshman second baseman Walter Diaz has made the adjustment to college pitching after a slow start. Diaz is now tied for third on the team with Paco Figueroa in batting average (.353) and is the Hurricanes’ leading hitter over the last 10 games with a .488 average. He was hitting just .217 with two doubles, a home run and five RBIs with a .326 slugging percentage in the first 14 games he played in. In the 24 games since then, Diaz is batting .422 with three home runs and has a hit in all but two games.
YOU JUST MADE THE LIST, BUDDY
Junior Ryan Braun’s home run North Carolina on April 16 broke a 9-9 tie and was the 38th of his career, moving him into a tie with Charles Johnson for eighth on the Miami all-time home run list. His eight RBIs in the North Carolina series gave him 175 for his career and moved past Jim Burt (2001-04) for eighth place on the all-time ledger. The following is a list of Miami’s all-time home run and RBI leaders.

JAY AMONG HURRICANE ELITE
Jon Jay’s fifth at-bat against N.C. State on March 6 was the 300th of his career at Miami and qualified him for placement among the school’s all-time hit leaders with 300-plus career at-bats. Jay debuted at No. 2 among Hurricane greats with a .403 average (121-of-300), second only to Pat Burrell (1996-98). Jay is now carrying a .398 career average heading into this weekend. The following is a look at who Jay has etched his name next to in the Miami record books:

LANE BLAZING HIS OWN TRAIL
Junior reliever Andrew Lane is having the best season of his career and has been the top performer out of the Hurricanes’ bullpen this season. The crafty left-hander began the season as a situational reliever and has evolved into the team’s top relief option with 24 appearances in 39 games. Lane is 1-0 and has thrown 31.0 innings with 27 strikeouts, seven walks and a 2.03 ERA. In addition, Lane has only allowed only three of the 19 runners he has inherited in relief to score. His numbers this season compare favorably against the combined numbers he put up his first two years as a Hurricane.

PEREZ SHUTTING THE DOOR
Sophomore pitcher Chris Perez was the third starter in Miami’s rotation before an injury to his throwing arm and a 10-game suspension for a violation of team rules forced him to miss 18 games. He has returned, but is now closing games instead of starting them. He threw for the first time against Oral Roberts on April 1 since before the N.C. State series, March 4-6. He threw two perfect innings against the Golden Eagles on April 1 and another perfect inning on April 3, totaling four strikeouts in the three innings. Perez made two appearances in the Virginia Tech series, pitching three innings and giving up four hits, one run and striking out three. He picked up the first win since his return to run his record to 4-1 with a two-inning performance against the Hokies last Sunday. Perez did not allow a hit in four and two-thirds innings of relief against North Carolina last week, picking up his first save of the season on April 16 and helping preserve a 7-7 tie on April 17.
2005 CAPTAINS NAMED Miami’s 2005 captains, picked by the players prior to the Oral Roberts series, are juniors Danny Figueroa and Andrew Lane. Both have demonstrated strong leadership through hard work in the offseason that has translated to their play in 2005. Figueroa missed all but three games in 2004 with elbow and shoulder injuries, but has worked rigorously to regain the form that made him one of Miami’s best center fielders of all time. Figueroa is batting .339 with a career-high four home runs. Lane, who might be the most improved pitcher on the UM staff, has been the Hurricanes’ top option out of the bullpen this season. He has appeared in 24 of UM’s 39 games and has allowed only three of the 19 runners he has inherited this season to cross the plate. His 2.03 ERA, 27 strikeouts and 31.0 innings are career-bests. Lane only pitched 6.1 innings in 2004 with 11 strikeouts.
KATIN NAMED ACC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Senior outfielder and designated hitter Brendan Katin was named Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week for his performances in a three-game sweep of Virginia Tech April 8-10. Katin had three hits in each of Miami’s three wins against the Hokies and totaled 10 RBIs to lead the Hurricanes to its first road sweep of the season. The senior tied career highs with two home runs and six RBIs in a 20-5 win on Saturday, April 9. Katin had three RBIs and a double in Sunday’s win over the Hokies, including two ninth-inning RBIs that helped seal the 9-5 win. He posted a 1.063 slugging percentage in the series and is now batting .418 in ACC play with three home runs and 19 RBIs. It was the first ACC Player of the Week Award given to a Hurricane since the team joined the conference this season. Pitcher Cesar Carrillo has earned Pitcher of the Week honors twice this season.
