Garabedian Named ACC Baseball Player Of The Week

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – Miami freshman catcher/designated hitter Alex Garabedian was named this week’s Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Player of the Week by the conference office Monday. It is the second straight week that a Hurricane has garnered the honor.

Garabedian led Miami to a 2-0-1 record against North Carolina last weekend, hitting .700 over the three-game span. He scored six runs, drove in seven, recorded a .786 on-base percentage and 1.200 slugging percentage. He broke open a 17-7 win against the Tar Heels last Friday, April 15, with a three-run blast in the second inning that reclaimed the lead for the Hurricanes. Later in the game, he recorded an additional two runs batted in to set a career high with five RBIs. Garabedian kept the Hurricanes in the game in Sunday’s 7-7 tie with a run and an RBI on 2-for-3 hitting with his first career triple. He improved his average from .261 to .304 over the weekend and increased his season totals to three home runs and 25 RBIs.

Senior Brendan Katin earned the award the week prior to Garabedian’s accolade for his performance in a three-game sweep at Virginia Tech.

Miami (29-9-1 overall, 13-4-1 Atlantic Coast Conference, ranked fifth in the latest ESPN/Sports Weekly Coaches Poll returns to action later this week with a three-game series against rival Florida State at Mark Light Field. The Hurricanes and 17th-ranked Seminoles begin the series with a 7 p.m. first pitch on Friday, April 22 and continue with a 7 p.m. tilt the following night before closing out the series at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Although Friday’s UM-FSU contest has been sold out since last Thursday, single-game tickets remain for the Saturday and Sunday contests, but are selling fast.
