Hurricanes Split Series Against Oral Roberts With 12-8 Loss Sunday

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Hurricanes gave up 10 runs in the fifth and sixth innings in a 12-8 loss to even a four-game series against Oral Roberts University Sunday afternoon at Mark Light Field. Miami’s record fell to 24-9 with the loss, while the Golden Eagles improved to 15-12.

Miami starter Dan Touchet threw 4.2 innings, gave up seven runs on nine hits to drop his record to 2-3 this season. Golden Eagles’ starting pitcher Nick Jones gave up three runs on three hits in five innings to earn the win and move his record to 2-2.

Hurricane shortstop Roger Tomas went 3-5 with two RBIs and second baseman Walter Diaz went 2-4 scoring three runs with two RBIs to lead Miami. Oral Roberts’ designated hitter Rene Recio led the team with a home run and four RBIs. First baseman Dennis Bigley went 2-4 with a home run and two RBIs.

The Hurricanes held an early 3-1 lead before Oral Roberts sent 11 batters to the plate in a six-run fifth inning. ORU’s runs came on six hits and five different Eagles collected RBIs in the inning to build a 7-3. The lead swelled to 11-3 in the sixth inning on a Tim Torres single and three-run home run from Recio. Bigley homered in the eighth for a 12-3 ORU lead.

UM rallied for five runs in the eighth and ninth innings. Tomas and Danny Robitaille both hit RBI singles in the eighth and Katin hit a two-run triple in the ninth for Miami.

UM reliever Scott Maine gave up four runs, three earned on four hits in 1.1 innings. Maine inherited two runners from Touchet allowing one to score on a wild pitch.

Tim Robertson pitched 3.2 innings of relief and gave up five runs on eight hits for Oral Roberts.Vince Bongiovanni, Raudel Alfonso and Chris Perez each threw one inning of relief for the Hurricanes.

The Hurricanes begin a six-game road trip with a three-game series against ACC foe Virginia Tech. Miami travels to Blacksburg for a 7 p.m. tilt against the Hokies on Friday, April 8, and will play the remaining games of the series in Roanoke at noon next Saturday and Sunday.
