MIAMI ENDS GEORGIA TECH'S ACC WIN STREAK IN 20-1 ROUT

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – Miami ended Georgia Tech’s Atlantic Coast Conference-record winning streak at 25 games with a 20-1 win in front of a season-high crowd of 3,574 at Mark Light Field Friday night.
The Hurricanes (22-5, 8-2 ACC) moved within a game of the Yellow Jackets (19-4, 9-1 ACC), who came into the game atop the ACC standings. It was the first loss for Georgia Tech since a 9-7 defeat at the hands of North Carolina on April 4 of last year.
While Tech’s winning streak ended, Cesar Carrillo’s continued. The junior pitcher threw 7.0 innings and gave up one run on six hits with six strikeouts and two walks to improve his season record to 6-0. Carrillo’s career record reached 18-0 with the win, tying him with Jerry Brust (1974-75) for the most wins to start a career and most consecutive decisions won in school history. Miami extended its record to 27-0 when Carrillo pitches with the victory.
Freshman Alex Garabedian came off the bench to drive in a career-high four runs on 3 of 4 hitting, including two doubles. Danny Figueroa went 2 for 4 with three RBIs and four runs, and Brendan Katin knocked in two runs and scored three runs on three hits.
Eight Hurricanes scored in a nine-run first inning (Danny Figueroa scored twice) on one hit, eight walks, three wild pitches, one passed ball and two hit batsmen. Figueroa set a school record by being hit by a pitch twice in the first inning.
Yellow Jacket starter Jason Neighborgall (5-1) was charged with the loss and yielded seven runs without giving up a hit on six walks, three wild pitches, one passed ball and one hit batter in a third of an inning before being relieved by Brad Rulon. Rulon gave up two runs on one hit, a two-run single to Ryan Braun to score Eddy Rodriguez and Danny Figueroa for the 9-0 lead. John Michael Vidic finished the first for the Yellow Jackets.
Tech’s only run came in the second inning on Andy Hawranick’s ground out to first that scored Jeremy Slayden from third.
The Hurricanes pushed their lead to 11-1 in the bottom half of the second and added three runs in the fifth, another run in the sixth and five runs in the eighth for the 20-1 final. Freshman Manny Miguelez pitched two scoreless innings of relief for Miami and combined with Carrillo to hold the Yellow Jackets to .193 hitting, .162 less than the .355 average the team held coming into the game.
Miami and Georgia Tech play the middle game of the three game series Saturday at 1 p.m. at Mark Light Field.
Notes: Danny Figueroa moved into fourth on Miami’s all-time hit-by-pitch list after he was hit for the 25th and 26th time in his career in the first inning… Neighborgall’s three wild pitches in the first inning set a Hurricane record… Braun moved into 10th-place on UM’s all-time RBI list, passing Manny Crespo’s (1998-2000) 158… The nine-run first inning was the most Miami has scored in an inning this season… UM tied a school record with its eight walks in the first inning… Diaz extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a second-inning single… The Hurricanes were walked a season-high 10 times, the most since the team walked 11 times against Florida State on April 10, 2004… The Hurricanes have scored in double digits in each of their last five wins… All nine Miami starters scored a run by the second inning… The 20 runs was the most for UM since a 22-3 win against Virginia on April 24, 2004… It was also the most runs the Hurricanes have ever scored against the Yellow Jackets… It was the largest margin of defeat for the Yellow Jackets sine a 22-3 loss to Memphis State on April 15, 1972.
