Miami Baseball Defeats Duke, 14-3

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – Nine different Miami Hurricanes (15-4, 3-1 ACC) crossed the plate in a 14-3 win against Duke (6-12, 0-4 ACC) in front of 2,512 Friday night at Mark Light Field.
Miami starter Cesar Carrillo moved his record to 4-0 and gave up seven hits, one unearned run and had seven strikeouts in six innings of work. Duke starter Greg Burke gave up five hits, nine earned runs and walked six batters in three and two-thirds innings to drop his record to 3-3.
Jon Jay went 2 for 3, with two RBIs and three runs and Danny Figueroa hit a home run, double and had two RBIs to lead Miami. Nine different Hurricanes had at least one RBI, including two apiece from Jon Jay and Brendan Katin.
Danny Figueroa started off the Miami first with his second leadoff home run of the year and his third home run overall.
The Hurricanes got all the breathing room they would need with eight runs in fourth inning, seven of which were scored with two outs. Burke gave up four hits, walked three and hit two batters in the inning. Ryan Braun was hit by a pitch and Danny Valencia walked to start the inning. Both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Katin and Alex Garabedian grounded out to second to score Braun. UM catcher Eddy Rodriguez followed Burke’s third walk of the inning to Danny Robitaille with a single to left that brought in Valencia for a 3-0 lead. Danny Figueroa walked and Paco Figueroa was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score two more runs. Jay hit a two-RBI single to right field and advanced to third on a fielding error that scored another UM run. Braun singled home Jay and Valencia tripled to score Braun to push the lead to 9-0.
Carrillo gave up three singles to start the fifth and walked Corey Whiting with two outs to score Jimmy Gallagher for Duke’s first run of the game to put the score at 9-1.
UM tacked on five more runs on Danny Figueroa’s double in the fifth, a two-run double by Katin in the sixth and RBIs by Walter Diaz and Valencia in the eighth.
The Blue Devils got two runs in the seventh on RBIs from Jonathan Nicolla and Jonathan Berger.
Despite the loss, Duke out-hit Miami, 10-9, and left eight runners on base.
Miami and Duke will play the second game of their three-game series at 7 p.m. on Saturday at Mark Light Field.
Notes: Braun tied a UM record with three stolen bases in the fourth inning…Jay extended his hitting streak to 16 with his fourth-inning single and has hit safely in 33 of the last 34 games… Miami moved to 25-0 all-time when Carrillo pitches… Braun left the game in sixth after being hit by a pitch in the face.
