Box Score

Coral Gables, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – A 9-0 fifth-inning deficit proved to be too much for the Miami Hurricanes (12-4, 1-1 ACC) to overcome in an 11-5 loss to North Carolina State (11-3, 1-1 ACC) Saturday night at Mark Light Field.

UM senior Dan Touchet pitched 2.1 innings and gave up seven runs to drop his season record to 1-1. N.C. State’s Jeff Stallings pitched 5.2 innings and gave up two runs on nine hits to move his record to 3-1.

Wolfpack sophomore third baseman Jonathan Diaz went 3-4 with a double and four RBI and Matt Devine drove in three runs to lead the victors.

N.C. State jumped to a 9-0 lead, starting with a three-run second inning that was sparked by Devine’s two-run triple. Brian Aragon placed a double to left to drive in Devine for a 3-0 lead. A five-run third inning pushed State’s lead to 8-0 and was capped by Jonathan Diaz’s three-run home run, the first of his career. Devine added an RBI single in the fourth for a 9-0 State lead.

Miami got on the board in the sixth with an RBI single to left field from Katin to score Braun from third. Danny Valencia walked and Katin was able to advance to third on a passed ball. Roger Tomas brought in Katin with a single to center to bring Miami within 9-2.

Diaz struck again for the Wolfpack with an RBI single in the seventh to score Chris Engle. Aragon scored on Vince Bongiovanni’s wild pitch to put N.C. State up 11-2.

Katin drove in Braun with his second double of the game and catcher Eddy Rodriguez drove in Valencia with a sacrifice fly to center in the Miami eighth. Walter Diaz’s grounder went between Devine’s legs at third base, allowing Katin to cross the plate for the final 11-5 score.
