Hurricane Baseball Defeats George Washington, 12-1

Coral Gables, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – The Miami Hurricanes baseball team (9-2) ended its two-game losing streak in convincing fashion with a 12-1 win against George Washington (4-3) at Mark Light Field on Friday night.
Miami starter Cesar Carrillo moved his record to 2-0 on the season, allowing only three hits and striking out nine in six innings of work. Carrillo retired 16 Colonials in a row after allowing the first two hitters he faced reach base on a single and an error in the first inning.
UM junior Ryan Braun, went 2-for-3 with three runs scored, four RBI and his first career grand slam. Senior Brendan Katin went 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBI.
Hurricane left fielder Jon Jay put Miami up 1-0 in the first inning with a soft single between the shortstop and third baseman to score Paco Figueroa from second base. A bases-loaded walk to Walter Diaz with no outs in the second, followed by a sacrifice fly to right field by Danny Figueroa that scored Katin gave Miami a 3-0 lead at the end of two.
The Hurricanes extended their lead to 5-0 in the third with an RBI single by Danny Valencia and a sacrifice fly by Katin that scored Valencia. Braun keyed a six-run fourth inning with his fifth home run of the year, a grand slam to center field. Katin and Tomas hit RBI doubles to push the lead to 11-0 at the end of the inning.
Braun scored his third run of the game in the sixth on an RBI single by Kevin Santiago to complete the Miami scoring. GW got its only run of the game in the eighth inning on an RBI single by Tom Shanley for the final 12-1 score.
Freshman Carlos Guitierrez gave up one run and three hits in two innings of relief and Raudel Alfonso closed out the game with a 1-2-3 ninth. GW’s Josh Wilkie gave up 11 runs, four earned, in four innings in the loss.
The three-game series resumes Saturday, Feb. 26 with a 7:30 p.m. first pitch at Mark Light Field.

Jay has hit safely in 25 of the last 26 games dating back to 2004… Santiago’s RBI in the sixth was the first of his career….The Hurricanes moved to 23-0 all-time in games Carrillo has pitched in…Hurricane pitchers allowed no walks for the first time since June 21, 2004 against Cal-State Fullerton… Miami stretched its home-winning streak to 20 games, the eighth longest streak in school history and longest since a 23-game home-winning streak in the 1998 season.
