Feb. 22, 2005

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – The seventh-ranked Miami Hurricanes baseball team begins a 12-game homestand this Friday, Feb. 25, with the first of a three-game series against George Washington at 7 p.m. at Mark Light Field.

The two teams will meet again on Saturday, Feb. 26 at 7:30 p.m. before closing out the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Miami (8-2) is coming off back-to-back losses at Florida and is trying to avoid its first three-game losing streak since 2002. The Hurricanes are 9-0 all-time against the Colonials but the two teams have not met since the 1996 season. All nine games of the all-time series have been played in Coral Gables, the last of which was a 19-3 Miami win on Feb. 18, 1996.

Sophomore left fielder Jon Jay leads the Hurricanes with a .487 average and a team-leading 19 hits and five doubles. Junior Ryan Braun leads the ACC with four home runs, 15 RBI and has a .882 slugging percentage.

George Washington (2-2) will complete a nine-game road trip to start its season with the three-game series. The Colonials have a long week ahead of them before they get to Miami, playing Old Dominion on Tuesday at 3 p.m. and at James Madison on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m.

The Hurricanes are currently riding a 19-game home-winning streak, dating back to a 13-3 win against Florida Atlantic on May 19, 2004. Miami won its last 12 home games of the 2004 season, including five wins in the NCAA playoffs. The longest home winning streak in school history is 29 games, lasting from April 25, 1980 to March 14, 1981.

Twelve of Miami’s next 13 games are at home, with the exception being a March 1 tilt with the Florida Marlins in Jupiter. In addition to the three-game series with George Washington, the Hurricanes play Northeastern (3/2), North Carolina State (3/4-6), Pittsburgh (3/8), Quinnipiac (3/9), Duke (3/11-13) and Rutgers (3/16). Miami owns a 71-14 (.835) series advantage with its opponents over the next 12 home games.
