Canes Take On FIU in Opener
Jan. 31, 2005
Coral Gables – Coming off an impressive 14-0 victory over the Alumni team Saturday evening, the Canes will start sophomore right-hander Cesar Carrillo on the mound. In his initial season with the Hurricanes, Carrillo compiled at 12-0 record with a 2.69 earned run average. Carrillo was named a preseason All-America by Baseball America. The Hurricanes were 19-0 in games that Carrillo made an appearance.
In the Alumni Game, centerfielder Danny Figueroa had three hits and five RBIs to pace UM. Figueroa missed the last half of the season in 2004 with a shoulder injury. Third baseman Ryan Braun, who suffered through an injury plagued 2004 season, had a two-run home run against the Alumni. Despite the injuries, Braun still hit .335 with 10 home runs and 45 RBIs in just 45 games. Braun, who was Baseball America’s 2003 Freshman of the Year, was named a preseason All-American by the publication.
“FIU is always a tough game,” said UM Head Coach Jim Morris. “They have a very solid program and our games with them are always very competitive.”
Last season, UM finished with a 50-13 record and tied for fifth at the College World Series. The CWS appearance was the ninth in the 11 years Coach Morris has been at Miami.
FIU comes into the game with a 2-0 record on the season having defeated Florida A&M in both ends of a doubleheader, 6-0 and 5-3 on Saturday.
