Carrillo, Gil, Jay Named NCBWA Preseason All-Americans

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Three members of the University of Miami’s 2005 baseball team were named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Preseason All-America team on Thursday.

Starting pitcher Cesar Carrillo and relief pitcher Danny Gil were named NCBWA Second-Team All-Americans, while left fielder Jon Jay was a third-team selection.

The Hurricanes will also wrap up fall practice on Saturday, Nov. 20, with their annual Scout Day and a full nine inning intrasquad at Mark Light Field beginning at 10 a.m. Scout Day is free and open to the public.

Carrillo, a junior from Chicago, turned in one of the best season’s in school history in 2004 with a 12-0 record, a 2.69 ERA with 91 strikeouts and two saves. The Hurricanes were 19-0 when he pitched and 16-0 in games that he started. Carrillo earned second-team All-America honors from Louisville Slugger in 2004.

Gil, a sophomore from Miami Columbus High School, worked out of the bullpen last season and took over the closer’s role in late April of his freshman season. He posted an 8-0 record with five saves and 49 strikeouts in just 38.2 innings of work.

Jay turned in an outstanding freshman campaign as well with a .368 batting average, six home runs and 56 RBI (second on the team). A teammate of Gil at Columbus High School a year prior, Jay stole 19 bases, drew 28 walks, posted a .447 on-base percentage and put down seven sacrifice bunts from the leadoff spot.

Jay and Gil were both named to Baseball American and Collegiate Baseball’s Freshmen All-America Team last season.

Miami will open the season on Feb. 1, at Mark Light Field against cross-town rival Florida International.
