Erick San Pedro and Adam Ricks Taken During the First Day of MLB Draft

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Miami catcher Erick San Pedro and second baseman Adam Ricks were taken on the first day of the 2004 Major League Baseball Draft Monday afternoon.

San Pedro, a junior from Hialeah, Fla., was taken in the second round by the Montreal Expos with the 54th overall pick. He was the second player taken by the Expos, the fourth catcher taken and the second college catcher taken overall. San Pedro is the highest Hurricanes’ draft pick since Mike Rodriguez was selected in the second round in the 2001 draft.

San Pedro, who attended Monsignor Edward Pace, is hitting .333 for Miami this season with a career-high 12 home runs 51 RBI. He is slugging .633 on the year with an on-base percentage of .452. San Pedro is throwing out almost 40 percent of opponent base runners and has picked off eight more.

Ricks, a native of San Ramon, Calif., was taken by the Chicago White Sox in the 10th round with the 299th overall pick. He came to the University of Miami from Sac City Community College and played in high school at San Ramon Valley High School.

Ricks is hitting .338 this season for the Hurricanes with 10 home runs and 46 RBI. He was the 10th second baseman taken in the draft.

The first 18 rounds of the Major League Baseball Draft were completed on Monday. The final 32 rounds will be completed on Tuesday, June 8.
