CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The fourth-ranked Hurricanes scored eight runs with two outs in the third inning as Miami blasted Jacksonville, 12-4, Saturday night in front of 1,537 fans a Mark Light Field.
Head Coach Jim Morris’ Hurricanes improve to 35-9 on the season with their fifth straight win. The Dolphins fall to 21-27 on the season and have lost three straight.
UM starter Cesar Carrillo stayed perfect on the year, improving his record to 8-0, allowing only three runs (one earned) on four hits over seven innings. Carrillo lowered his team-leading ERA to 2.67 and struck out six.
Jacksonville starter Dennis Robinson, who came into the game with 11 wins (second nationally) and a streak of 26 innings without allowing an earned run, took the loss for the Dolphins. Robinson’s streak of 26 innings ended in the first inning on a RBI single from Adam Ricks, scoring Jon Jay who led the game off with a double. UM would then tie the game as Jim Burt ripped his 18th double of the season into left field to score Ricks.
Ricks paced the Hurricanes with four hits, including his seventh home run of the season and three RBI. Jay added three hits, three runs scored and two RBI, while Erick San Pedro chipped in with a three-RBI double in the third inning.
An error by Jacksonville shortstop Pete Clifford with two outs in the third inning proved to be the decisive play of the game. The Hurricanes would score eight runs after Clifford’s error, as UM hitters shelled Robinson with four hits, including Ricks’ home run.
Miami would tack on a RBI single from Joey Hooft in the fourth inning and a run scoring single from Brendan Katin in the eighth.
JU left-fielder Rob Hudson hit his first home run of the season in the fifth inning and plated the Dolphins final run of the game in the ninth inning with a RBI ground out. Clifford led Jacksonville at the plate with two hits.
