CORAL GABLES, Fla. — The fifth-ranked Hurricanes captured the opening game of a Saturday afternoon double-header with Penn State, 6-1, at Mark Light Field.
Right-hander Cesar Carrillo earned his fourth win of the season with a career-high eight innings of work. He allowed one run on three hits in the longest outing by a Hurricanes’ pitcher this season.
Ryan Braun and Jim Burt paced the Hurricanes with two hits each. Braun homered and drove in three runs, while Burt added two singles with two RBI.
PSU posted a single tally in the first innings as Derrick Barr’s leadoff double scored on a balk by Carrillo.
Jim Burt drove in his 34th run of the season in the bottom half of the first inning with a single down the right-field line. With two outs, Ryan Braun connected for his fourth home run of the season to give UM a 4-1 lead.
Miami increased its lead to 5-1 in the fourth inning with a Texas-leaguer off the bat of Erick San Pedro. The single scored Braun, who had drawn a walk and stole his team-high 17th base of the season.
Burt added his 35th RBI in the fifth inning with a single to right field that was almost identical to his first inning hit. The single drove in Adam Ricks, who had double with two outs.
The nightcap will begin at 7 p.m. at Mark Light Field with UM’s left-hander Brandon Camardese starting on the mound. Darius Rice will throw out the first pitch for tonight’s game.
