CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The sixth-ranked University of Miami baseball team crushed the Elon Phoneix in front of 1,517 fans at Mark Light Field on Saturday afternoon behind Brendan Katin’s two home runs and Adam Ricks five hits.

Miami improves to 10-3 on the season and have won six straight, while Elon falls to 6-8 on the season.

Dan Touchet (2-0) picked up the win for Miami by holding the Phoenix scoreless over five innings. He allowed only three hits on 91 pitches, while striking out seven. Matt Garner took the loss for Elon, allowing 11 runs (five earned) on seven hits. He struck out four and walked three.

Katin connected for his third and fourth home runs of the season. His first home run of the night came in UM’s eight-run second inning. After doubling to lead off the inning, Katin came up for the second time with the bases loaded and hit a high, towering shot off the scoreboard for his second grand slam of the season. He finished the game 3 for 4 with six RBI.

Ricks set career highs with five hits and four runs scored, while tying his personal best with five RBI. He also hit his second home run of the season and doubled to highlight his five-hit night.

Catcher Eddy Rodriguez also collected three hits off the bench for Miami with a double and an RBI. Joey Hooft, Ryan Braun, Jim Burt and Gaby Sanchez all picked up two hits each in the Hurricanes’ 22-hit attack.

J.D. Cockroft worked two innings in relief, while Chiqui Chirino and Alex Blanco worked one apiece. The UM pitching staff allowed only six hits on the night, while striking out 10 and walking only one.

Elon’s designated hitter and shortstop Tyler Stevens paced the Phoenix with two hits in three at bats.

The Hurricanes and Phoenix conclude their three games series on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Mark Light Field with Miami looking to complete the sweep.
