Tuesday's Football Press Conference Quotes
Oct. 7, 2003
Opening remarks
“When you win a close game like we did against West Virginia in which you were favored to win, you wonder what the attitude of your team is going to be like. I think our attitude is terrific right now. We have done some great work, had some great film study, and I know it is early in the week, but I am very excited about where our team is. We are anxious to play a game like Florida State in the national spotlight. That is why you come to the University of Miami and Florida State – to play in games like this.”
On FSU
“This is the ninth time I’ve got to see Florida State and I think this team is as good as any one I have see to this point. I don’t know how Bobby (Bowden) would perceive his own team, he would certainly have a better idea than I would, but I think they are very good. They have a great defensive team, they are number one in the country in scoring defense. Offensively, their quarterback is experienced and playing extremely well. They have terrific running back. They have a couple (running backs) who have been injured, but I believe Booker and Washington will be back for our game. We have a tremendous challenge, but I think we are up to it and feel good about the opportunity.”
On the injury to Frank Gore
“The injury to Frank defiantly hurts our football team, but more importantly we really hate it for Frank Gore. He has been through a lot and given us a lot. From a football standpoint, we have always approached it with the mindset that it is not the University of Larry Coker or Frank Gore, this is the University of Miami and when someone has an opportunity, they have to step up. Jarrett Payton has that chance now along with Tyrone Moss and Jason Geathers.”
On playing the underdog role against FSU
“Florida State is on a high, and they are playing very well and come into the game with momentum. The last two years it seems that we have came in with momentum so it is a little different this year. Last year they had just lost a tough game to Louisville and this year I think it is the total opposite. I think being the underdog will motivate our players.”
