Oral Roberts Dump Hurricanes, 10-1

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (hurricanesports.com) – The University of Miami baseball team dropped the second game of the three-game series with Oral Roberts, 10-1, in front of 1,639 fans Saturday night at Mark Light Field.
Miami drops to 24-6 on the season, while Oral Roberts improves its 2003 mark to 14-12.
UM starter Vince Bongiovanni turned in his shortest outing of the season with 2.2 innings, while allowing four runs on four hits. Oral Roberts starting pitcher Dennis Bigley scored the complete-game victory giving up one run on three hits. Bethune Cookman’s Helpiz Moises was the last opposing pitcher to throw a complete game victory against the Hurricanes, recording the 3-2 win May 4th, 2002.
Oral Roberts got on the scoreboard first with an unearned run in the first inning. Bongiovanni dropped a throw from Jim Burt while covering first base. Grant Plumley came around to score on the play after a two-out single up the middle.
Ryan Braun extended his hitting streak to a team-best 12 games with a first inning single.
A walk and a two-run home run off the bat David Castillo extended the ORU lead to 3-0 in the third inning. Bigley followed with a double under the glove of a diving Danny Figueroa in center field. Bigley would come around to score on a single by Josh Lex that chased Bongiovanni from the game. Marcelo Albir came in to pitch for UM and got Kevin Lamb to ground out to third base to end the inning.
The Golden Eagles extended their lead to five runs, 5-0, in the fourth on a single to right field by Scott Modeste and an error by Brian Barton allowing Ryan Welborn to score. Welborn reached first on a two-out walk earlier in the inning.
Miami ended its streak of four consecutive scoreless innings in the fifth, 5-1, with a sacrifice fly by Gaby Sanchez scoring Erick San Pedro from third. San Pedro reached first base with a one-out walk and advanced to third on a single to right field by Adam Ricks.
Oral Roberts added two runs in the eighth inning, 10-1, on four hits and no errors. The Golden Eagles’ Welborn and Grant Plumley came around to score the runs, giving Oral Roberts a nine-run lead.
Miami and Oral Roberts will decide the series at 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 6, at Mark Light Field.
