Oct. 23, 2002
Coral Gables, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – The Anaheim Angels went ahead of the San Francisco Giants in the World Series grabbing a 2-1 lead in games after a 10-4 victory Tuesday night at Edison Field.
Playing for the Angels is former University of Miami outfielder Orlando Palmeiro. He played with the Hurricanes in 1990 after playing at Miami-Dade South for two seasons and Southridge High School before that.
Palmeiro signed with the Angels after the 1990 season, after previously being drafted by the New York Yankees out of Miami-Dade and the Toronto Blue Jays out of Southridge.
So far in the World Series, Palmeiro has come off the bench with just one at bat in game No. 1’s 4-3 loss to the Giants at Pacific Bell Park in San Francisco. He popped out in the eighth inning pinch-hitting for Bengie Molina. He did not make an appearance in either of Anaheim’s first two victories in game No. 2 or No. 3.
This season, Palmeiro played in a total of 110 games, batting .300 in 263 at bats (79 hits). He also totaled 35 runs scored, 12 doubles, one triple, 31 RBI, 30 walks, 22 strikeouts and seven stolen bases. Starting 62 of 86 games playing in the outfield, Palmeiro put together a .993 fielding percentage – his highest since 1999 (.994).
For his career, Palmeiro is batting .281 over eight seasons – all with the Anaheim Angels.
Prior to the series at Edison Field, Palmeiro received more good news as his wife, Tami, gave birth to the couple’s first child, Faith, last Friday morning in Miami where the Palmeiro’s reside in the offseason.
