Three Hurricanes Slated To Walk Across The Stage
May 9, 2002
Coral Gables, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) — – Three pitchers of the Hurricanes’ 2002 baseball team, Luke DeBold, Troy Roberson and Vince Vazquez, will walk across the stage this Friday as part of Graduation Commencement ceremonies.
DeBold, of Dyer, Ind., will graduate with a degree in Systems Analysis. After recording 67 strikeouts to just seven walks as a junior in 2001, DeBold entered the 2002 season as a preseason All-American. A soreness in his pitching elbow followed and relegated him to the bench and rehabilitation for most of the season. With his recent return a couple of weeks ago, DeBold has had two consecutive outings without giving up a run and will be depended on heavily down the stretch.
Roberson, from Royal Palm Beach, will receive a degree in Liberal Arts. Roberson, like DeBold, has spent a great deal of the 2002 season resting his throwing elbow. After have surgery that forced him to miss the Hurricanes’ 2001 National Championship season, Roberson returned in 2002 and soon became the opening day starter. He recently scored the win in his last start against Bethune-Cookman.
Vazquez, a resident of Miramar, will earn a Finance degree. Vazquez made his claim in the 1999 College World Series starring for the Hurricanes as a dominant set-up pitcher, but an offseason injury to his pitching elbow ended his bid to play in the 2000 season. He returned in 2001 and assisted the team to its second national title in three seasons. Among the honors Vazquez has achieved at Miami was twice being chosen as the team captain (2001, 2002).
All three players will board a flight later Friday and meet the team in Atlanta.
