Baseball Falls At No. 10 Florida State 13-3

Tallahassee, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – The University of Miami baseball team (17-14) was defeated by 10th-ranked Florida State (29-10), 13-3, in front of 4,785 fans Friday night at Dick Howser Stadium.

FSU out-hit Miami 13-8 in the game, while totaling a season-best five home runs off of UM pitching. The Seminoles scored in each inning, before getting held scoreless in the seventh.

FSU starter Matt Lynch (6-1) earned the win going 7.0 innings with seven hits, three earned runs, two walks and five strikeouts.

UM starter T.J. Prunty (4-2) scored the loss as he went 2.2 innings allowing five hits, seven earned runs, four walks, three strikeouts and one hit batter. Reliever Brandon Camardese came in for 2.1 innings with five hits, four earned runs, one walk, three strikeouts and two hit batters.

Miami opened the scoring, 1-0, in the first inning scoring one run on three hits and one error. With one out, Javy Rodriguez singled with a line drive up the middle. Danny Matienzo followed with another line drive single up the middle to put runners on first and second. Kevin Howard then hit into a fielder’s choice grounder to second, forcing Matienzo out, but allowing Rodriguez to score when Scott Zech’s throw to first bounced past first base.

FSU tied the game, 1-1, in the bottom of the first on Ryan Barthelemy’s RBI double to left center scoring Stephen Drew from third. Drew led off with a walk, moved to second on a walk to Zech and to third on Nick Roger’s fielder’s choice grounder.

The Seminoles jumped ahead, 4-1, in the second inning on Drew’s three-run home run off Prunty to right center. The home run also scored Mike Futrell, who led off with a single to left field, and Richie Smith, who walked.

FSU scored three more in the third off Prunty, 7-1, as he allowed two home runs. Tony McQuade led off with a walk. Jerrod Brown followed with a two-run home run deep to right field. After Futrell grounded out and Tony Richie struck out, Smith hit the second home run of the inning to centerfield. Prunty was replaced with Camardese, who got Miami out of the inning.

Miami narrowed the FSU lead, 7-3, in the fourth with two runs on one hit and no errors. Matt Barket led off with a walk. He moved to third on Matt Dryer’s double down the left field line. Danny Figueroa brought the first run with a fielder’s choice bunt to first base scoring Barket and moving Dryer to third. Figueroa stole second. The second run came in, Dryer, on Brad Safchik’s fielder’s choice grounder to second base, with Figueroa out on the play.

Barthelemy extended FSU’s lead, 8-3, with a solo home run off Camardese in the fourth inning.

The Seminoles added to their lead, 11-3, scoring three runs in the fifth with Camardese on the mound. After loading the bases, Zech singled in Futrell with a hit to right field. Rogers followed by getting hit by a Camardese pitch to score Richie from third. After Barthelemy struck out, McQuade was hit by a pitch to bring in Smith.

Smith hit his second home run of the game in the sixth inning off Vince Vazquez, a two-run shot that also scored Richie, to put FSU ahead 13-3.
