Baseball Hosts Minnesota For Three-Game Series

Coral Gables, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) — – The University of Miami baseball team (2-4), ranked as high as seventh by Baseball America, hosts the Minnesota Golden Gophers (0-0) for a three-game series at Mark Light Stadium beginning Friday night at 7 p.m. Saturday’s baseball game begins at 1 p.m., while the Sunday game is at Noon.
The Friday night game with Minnesota will also mark the return of former Hurricanes star Dave Berg, who will throw out the ceremonial first pitch. Berg recently signed with the Toronto Blue Jays after spending his entire career with the Florida Marlins organization.
The Friday night game will be televised live by Fox Sports Net Florida and carried by UM’s radio flagship Sports Radio 560 WQAM. The Saturday game can be heard in Spanish on WACC 830 AM Radio Paz. All three games can be heard live on the Internet at hurricanesports.com or on the student voice of the Hurricanes, WVUM 90.5 FM.
On the mound for the Hurricanes Friday night will be junior RHP Troy Roberson (0-0, 3.86 ERA). Roberson will be followed by junior RHP Kiki Bengochea (0-2, 6.23 ERA) Saturday afternoon and sophomore RHP T.J. Prunty (0-0, 8.10 ERA) on Sunday.
Minnesota will counter with junior RHP C.J. Woodrow (7-4 in 2001 with a 4.82 ERA) on the mound Friday night, sophomore LHP Jay Gagner (4-3, 3.60 ERA) on Saturday and Sophomore RHP Josh Krogman (4-0, 4.89 ERA) on Sunday.
Senior All-American Javy Rodriguez, who is batting .417 on the season, leads Miami offensively. Following Rodriguez in the statistics is fellow senior Matt Dryer, who is batting .364 for the season. Kevin Mannix leads the team with seven RBI and two home runs, while Dryer and Haas Pratt each have one home run.
The Hurricanes enter the 2002 series with Minnesota holding an all-time record of 11-3 over the Golden Gophers since the 1981 season. Most recently, UM swept three games en route to the tournament championship at Minnesota’s Hormel Foods Baseball Classic at the Metrodome in Minneapolis last season. Among the three victories was a 10-1 win over Minnesota in game No. 2. At the Hormel Foods Classic, Miami also defeated San Diego State (8-6) and Arkansas (8-2). Javy Rodriguez was named the tournament’s MVP, while joined by Brian Walker (P), Kevin Howard (3B), Kevin Mannix (OF) and Mike Rodriguez (OF) on the All-Tournament Team.
The Hurricanes are 94-40-5 vs. the Big Ten Conference all-time. Under Jim Morris, the Hurricanes are 20-4-1 vs. the Big Ten since 1994.
