Bengochea Pitches USA Past Taiwan 10-0
July 22, 2001
Long Island, NY — Team USA starting pitcher Kiki Bengochea (RHP,So, Miami) tossed 8.0 shutout innings, holding Taiwan to just four hits, as the USA Baseball National Team (16-5-1) defeated Taiwan 10-0 in the first meeting between the two sides this year, at EAB Park on Long Island.
It was Team USA’s 26th consecutive win over the Taiwanese National Team, in games played dating back to 1990. Team USA went 10-0 against Taiwan last summer.
The USA National Team has now won nine in a row, and 14 of their last 17 games overall on the 2001 Red, White and Blue Tour under Head Coach Pat McMahon. Bengochea (3-0) has now worked 30.2 scoreless innings since allowing the only run he has surrendered this summer, back on the 4th of July.
After Kevin Howard (IF, So, Miami) doubled leading off the second to extend his personal hitting streak to seven games, Carlos Quentin (OF, Fr, Stanford) was able to coax a two-out walk off Taiwanese starter Chih Chia Chang.
Omar Quintanilla (IF, Fr, Texas) then belted a first pitch fastball over the right field wall to give the Red, White and Blue a 3-0 jump. It was his team-leading third homer of the summer.
Team USA added an unearned tally in the fifth when Quintanilla scored on Jeremy Reed’s (IF, So, Long Beach State) sacrifice fly to left. The Texas sophomore-to-be scored his third run of the game in the seventh, after he doubled and came around on a base hit by Javi Herrera (C, Fr,Tennessee).
Reed then singled to knock Chang out of the game, and Rickie Weeks (OF, Fr, Southern) drove Taipei reliever Po Chang Shen’s first pitch over center fielder Chien Ming Chang’s head for a two-run triple.
Quentin connected for his first homer of the summer – a two-run shot off Taiwanese reliever Yueh Ping Lin – in the eighth, to make it 10-0.
Bobby Brownlie (RHP, So, Rutgers) relieved Bengochea and struck out the side in the ninth to end the game.
The 2001 USA Baseball National Team Red, White and Blue Tour continues on Monday evening in Bridgeport, Connecticut when Team USA and Taiwan play the second of this eight-game series. Bobby Brownlie (RHP, So, Rutgers) gets the ball for Team USA.
