Championship Post-game Notes

With its win over Stanford, Miami records its second NCAA title in the last three seasons and the fourth overall. The fourth title ties Miami with Texas for fourth on the all-time NCAA list. Miami improves to 4-2 in national championship games including victories in 1982, 1985, 1999 and 2001. Miami finished second in 1974 and 1996.

Miami ends the season with a nation’s best 17-game win streak. Miami’s last loss was a 3-2 loss to Jacksonville on May 4. In addition, Miami has won a school best eight consecutive games at the CWS dating back to the 1999 CWS. Miami turned its 81st double-play of the season in the fourth inning which ties the UM single-season record set in 1995.Miami’s 12 runs are the most ever by the Hurricanes in a CWS Championship game. The total surpasses the previous high of 10 runs in the Hurricanes 10-6 win over Texas in the 1985 National Championship game.Miami has scored 10 or more runs in seven of its nine NCAA Tournament games including three of its four CWS games.Stanford starting pitcher Mike Gosling left the game after 4.0 innings of work marking the eighth pitcher of the postseason to last less than five innings against the Hurricanes. Miami knocked 36 opposing pitchers out of the game in less than five innings this season. With its four wins at the College World Series Miami improves to 16-1 this season in games played away from Mark Light Stadium, including an impressive 16 consecutive victories. Miami’s only loss away from home this season was an 11-10 loss to Florida Atlantic on January 26, 2001. Miami is 48-0 this season when leading after six innings and 51-0 when leading after eight innings. Kevin Brown’s homerun in the fifth inning marked his third of the 2001 CWS and the fifth in eight career CWS games. It also marks the second straight CWS Championship game in which he has hit a homerun. Brown homered in the Hurricanes’ 6-5 victory over Florida State in 1999. Of Brown’s 11 career CWS hits, 10 have gone for extra bases (5 HR, 5 2B).Miami used 10 different pitchers during the 2001 CWS. Miami pitchers registered 20 appearances at this season’s CWS including 16 relief appearances. The Hurricanes recorded 223 relief appearances this season establishing a new NCAA record. Miami broke the old record of 194 set by San Diego State in 1982. Freshman George Huguet (44 appearances) and junior Luke DeBold (44 appearances) led the Hurricanes’ pitching staff in appearances this season. Miami ends the season with a 53-12 record marking the most wins for head coach Jim Morris at Miami. The 53 wins are the most since UM finished 55-10 in 1992. Luke DeBold entered the game in the sixth inning marking his 90th career relief appearance. With the appearance, DeBold ties Allan Westfall (1994-96) at for fifth-place on the all-time UM career list. Kevin Brown doubled in the sixth inning marking the 53rd double of his career. Brown ties Frank Dominguez (1985-88) for fourth on UM’s all-time list. The Hurricanes 43-30 (.589) all-time mark in CWS games ranks fourth all-time in victories behind Southern California (74-26), Texas (64-49) and Arizona State (55-30). Under Jim Morris, UM is 17-9 at the CWS and is on an eight-game win streak.
