UM STREAKING AT THE RIGHT TIME: Miami is currently riding a nation’s best 16 game win streak heading into the championship game against Stanford. Miami has not dropped a game since a 3-2 loss to Jacksonville on May 4. In addition, Miami has won a school best seven consecutive games at the CWS dating back to its 4-0 mark in 1999.
ROAD SWEET ROAD: With its three wins at the College World Series Miami improves to 15-1 this season in games played away from Mark Light Stadium, including an impressivfe 15 consecutive victories. Miami’s only loss away from home this season was an 11-10 loss to Florida Atlantic on January 26, 2001.
RUNNING WILD: This season’s Hurricane team has been one of the most prolific base-stealing teams in UM history. The team has recorded an NCAA-high 227 steals this season which also ranks second on the UM all-time single season list behind the 1985 Miami NCAA Championship team which recorded 231 steals (80 games). A total of four Hurricanes have recorded 30 or more steals this season including Javy Rodriguez (66), Mike Rodriguez (51) and Marcus Nettles (44) and Charlton Jimerson (31). Javy Rodriguez also leads the nation with his 66 steals, while Nettles (#4) and Mike Rodriguez (#5) place in the top five.

HURRICANES REACH TITLE GAME: With their 12-6 win over Tennessee the Hurricanes advanced to their sixth national championship game. Miami is 3-2 in national championship games including victories in 1982, 1985 and 1999. Miami also played for the national title in 1974 and 1996.

UM GOES FOR FOURTH TITLE: A win over Stanford would give Miami its second NCAA title in the last three seasons and the fourth overall for the Hurricanes. A fourth title would tie Miami with Texas for fourth on the all-time NCAA list.

MIAMI-STANFORD SERIES: Miami and Stanford meet for the seventh time with the Hurricanes leading the all-time series 4-2. The Hurricanes and Cardinal have met twice in the College World Series with both teams winning once. Miami defeated Stanford, 17-3, on the way to the 1985 National Championship while the Cardinal knocked off the Hurricanes, 2-1, en route to the 1988 National Title.

MAN OF STEAL: Senior centerfielder Charlton Jimerson recorded four steals against Tennessee on Thursday matching his career-high and tying the CWS single-game record held by 16 others (last time: Johnathen Smith, Miami vs. Cal State Fullerton, 5-31-92). He has seven stolen bases overall at the 2001 CWS and is one away from tying the all-time record of eight set by Miami’s Calvin James in 1985 (6 games) and Arizona’s Tommy Hinzo in 1986 (5 games).
DOUBLING UP: Senior first baseman Kevin Brown doubled in the fourth inning marking the 52nd double of his career. Brown moves into fifth-place on the UM career doubles list. Brown is one double shy of tying Frank Dominguez (1985-88) for fourth on the all-time list.
EXTRA, EXTRA: When Kevin Brown records a base hit at the College World Series it almost always goes for extra bases. Eight of Brown’s nine career CWS hits have gone for extra bases (4 HR, 4 2B). In 1999 Brown went 4-13 with two home runs and two doubles. This year Brown is 5-10 with two home runs, two doubles and a single. In seven career CWS games Brown has gone 9-23 (.391) with four home runs and four doubles. He has 25 total bases and a slugging percentage of 1.09.
BATTING AROUND IN THE ORDER: Miami has batted around three times at the 2001 College World Series, all against Tennessee. The Hurricanes batted around in the fourth inning of Thursday’s game versus Volunteers and in the second and sixth innings of Miami’s 21-13 win against Tennessee in its CWS opener.
SCORING IN BUNCHES: Miami scored seven runs in the fourth inning of its 12-6 win over Tennessee marking the sixth time this season and the second time against the Volunteers the Hurricanes have scored seven or more runs in an inning. Miami set a season-high with eight runs in the seventh inning against Clemson in the Super Regional on June 2.
COUNT IT: Miami is 47-0 this season when leading after six innings and 50-0 when leading after eight innings.
THE MOST WINS UNDER MORRIS: With its win over Tennessee Miami improved to 52-12 on the season marking the most wins for head coach Jim Morris at Miami. The 52 wins are the most since UM finished 55-10 in 1992.
CAN YOU SPELL RELIEF: Miami used four pitchers in relief giving the Hurricanes 221 relief appearances on the season establishing a new NCAA record. Miami broke the old record of 194 set by San Diego State in 1982. Freshman George Huguet (44 appearances) and junior Luke DeBold (43 appearances) lead the Hurricanes’ pitching staff.
AND NOW ENTERING THE GAME: Luke DeBold entered Miami’s 12-6 win over Tennessee in the sixth inning marking his 89th career relief appearance. DeBold ranks sixth on UM’s career list for relief appearances and is one appearance shy of tying Allan Westfall (1994-96) at for fifth-place with 90 appearances.
COMEBACK KIDS: Miami overcame a 4-0 deficit against Tennessee marking its 14th come-from-behind win this season. The 4-0 deficit also tied for the largest deficit overcome this season. Miami was down 4-0 to Florida on Feb. 10 before coming away with an 8-7 win, and was down 5-1 to Florida State before taking a 7-5 decision.
LEAD-OFF HOME RUNS: Charlton Jimerson led off the 2001 CWS opener vs. Tennessee with a home run of UT starter Wyatt Allen. In his next game against Southern California, Jimerson once again led off the game with a home run off Rik Currier. The lead-off home runs were the second and third of the season for Jimerson.
HUGUET RECORDS THE SAVE: Freshman closer George Huguet recorded his 14th save of the season in UM’s 4-3 victory over Southern California. The 14 saves, which places third nationally, ties the UM freshman record set by Robbie Morrison in 1996.
HUGUET, DeBOLD APPEAR FREQUENTLY: George Huguet’s 44 appearances in relief place third all-time on the UM single season list. His 44 appearances also tie for third on the overall appearances list with Dave Eichorn (1983) and Danny Smith (1982). Luke DeBold’s 43 appearances in relief ties for fourth all-time, and ties for fifth on the overall appearances list.
A LOT OF CWS WINS: The Hurricanes 42-30 all-time mark in CWS games places fourth all-time in victories behind Southern California (74-26), Texas (64-49) and Arizona State (55-30). Under Jim Morris, UM is 16-9 at the CWS and on a seven-game win streak.
JAVY RODRIGUEZ IS THE LONE 60-60 HURRICANE: Javy Rodriguez’ 66 stolen bases and 60 RBI make him the first player at UM to reach the 60-plateau in each of the two categories.
DOUBLE-DIGIT SCORING IN THE POSTSEASON: The Hurricanes have scored 10 or more runs in seven of its nine postseason games in 2001.
MATIENZO HAS CAREER-GAME IN FIRST TENNESSEE GAME: Danny Matienzo had four hits and six RBI in the Hurricanes CWS opener vs. Tennessee. The four hits were a season-best, while his six RBI tied his career high. The six RBI tied for fifth all-time in a CWS game. His two home runs in the game tied for third all-time in a CWS game. The six RBI set a new UM CWS record, while the two home runs tied the UM CWS record.
LOTS OF PITCHERS USED: UM’s seven pitchers used in the CWS opener vs. Tennessee tied for the most in a CWS game, also held by five other teams.
MORE UM CWS RECORDS OCCUR IN CWS OPENER: The 21 runs scored set a new UM CWS record, surpassing the 17 scored against Stanford in 1985. The 20 base hits passed the 19 recorded in that Stanford game. The 19 RBI was the most since totaling 17 vs. the Cardinal.
AGAINST NATIONALLY RANKED OPPONENTS: The Hurricanes have forged a 24-10 record against nationally ranked opponents in 2001 and an impressive 7-1 mark vs. top-10 ranked schools.
UM RECORD 11 PLAYERS GET DRAFTED: The 11 Hurricanes drafted in 2001 surpass the former school record of 10 set in 1996. In total, 58 players have been drafted (not including free agent signings) during the Jim Morris era (1994-2001). The following players were drafted in the 2001 MLB First-Year Player Draft:

UM ON TV IN 2001: The Hurricanes have forged a 19-5 record in televised games during the 2001 season and are currently on a six-game win streak.
SWEEPING THROUGH THE FIELD: Miami has won its eight games played so far in the 2001 postseason and have advanced to the National Championship game. In 1999, when UM won its last National Championship, the Hurricanes swept its nine games played en route to the CWS title.
