June 7, 2001

Omaha, Neb. (www.hurricanesports.com) — – University of Miami junior shortstop Javy Rodriguez and freshman closer George Huguet were named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association All-American team.

Rodriguez, who leads the nation with 66 stolen bases, was a Second Team selection. Huguet, who is tied for third nationally with 13 saves, was named to the Third Team.

A 2001 Coral Gables Regional All-Tournament selection, Rodriguez leads the team heading into the College World Series with a .384 batting average, 86 hits, 58 RBI, four triples, 120 total bases, and 66 stolen bases. His 66 stolen bases also set a new school single season record, surpassing 62 by Orlando Gonzalez in 1974. Earlier this season, he was also chosen the Tournament MVP at the Hormel Foods Baseball Classic at the Hubert H. Humphrey MetroDome in Minneapolis. Rodriguez was a second-team All-America selection from Louisville Slugger.

Huguet, who is ranked third nationally with 13 saves, has compiled a 1-0 record and a 2.27 ERA in his first season with the Hurricanes. The Barbara Goleman High graduate was also named the team’s Rookie of the Year. He assumed the closer’s role midway into February and compiled the most saves at UM since Robbie Morrison totaled 14 in 1996. The last UM closer to compile at least 13 saves was All-American Michael Neu in 1999. Louisville Slugger also chose Huguet as a Freshman All-American.
