MIAMI NOTES

Miami’s upcoming appearance in the College World Series will be the Hurricanes’ 19th overall, all coming since 1974. Miami has made more CWS appearances in that 28-season span of any program in the nation. The 13 appearances by Texas and Florida State since then is the closest total to the Hurricanes’ mark. FSU is playing at Georgia in another Super Regional this weekend, seeking their 14th appearance since 1974.Miami’s CWS appearance marks the Hurricanes’ seventh CWS berth in eight seasons under head coach Jim Morris.Miami’s two winning pitchers against Clemson both came to UM on football scholarships. Dan Smith, the game one winner, came to UM as a tight end before forfeiting his scholarship and paying his own way with the UM baseball team this season. T.J. Prunty, the game two winner, came to UM as a quarterback in 2000, sitting out UM’s football season as a redshirt before going full-time with baseball and taking a scholarship with the club.Miami will meet the winner of the Tennessee-East Carolina series when the College World Series begins on Friday. Miami went 2-1 against East Carolina this season and has not played Tennessee this year. The Hurricanes are 3-2 all-time against ECU and 4-4 against the Volunteers of Tennessee. Miami and ECU clashed at Coral Gables March 16-18 with the Canes taking a tough three-game series over the Pirates. The last time Tennessee and Miami met on the diamond occurred April 16-18, 1999, when the Vols swept three games from the Hurricanes in Knoxville.Miami enters the CWS riding a 13-game winning streak, the longest streak in the nation. Miami’s last loss came on May 4 vs. Jacksonville.The Hurricanes have won 16 consecutive post-season games at Mark Light Stadium. Miami’s last post-season loss at home was a 6-5 setback to North Carolina on May 22, 1998.Javy Rodriguez added three stolen bases to his record-setting total this evening, pushing his career total to 98 (ahead of current UM assistant coach Gine DiMare and former star Bill Wrona [1982-83] on the UM career stolen bases chart. Rodriguez also has 66 thefts this season, also a single-season record.The Hurricanes collected 12 stolen bases in the Clemson series (2 Friday + 10 tonight). Miami has 24 stolen bases in the post-season, giving the nation’s best base-stealing team a total of 215 for the 2001 season. Miami has stolen 10 or more bases three times this season.Miami’s eight-run outburst in the seventh inning is the largest single-inning scoring output by Miami in 2001.Tonight’s 14-run outburst by UM is a new Hurricanes record for a single game in an NCAA Super Regional.Miami stole 10 bases this evening, tying an NCAA record for stolen bases in a post-season game. Miami is one of five teams to achieve that feat, with Clemson the last to steal 10 bases in a 1988 tournament game.Miami improves its lead in the series with Clemson to 21-13-1, including a 9-5 record under head coach Jim Morris. In the postseason, UM and Clemson have now met 12 times with the Hurricanes holding a 9-3 advantage. UM now leads 6-3 in meetings with the Tigers at Coral Gables.Tonight’s crowd of 5,236 is the second highest of the season for Miami and the second sellout of the 2001 season (along with an April 14 crowd of 5,643 vs. Florida State).Miami improves to 11-0 this season in their new gray uniforms.Miami is now 47-0 this season when leading after eight innings, 17-2 in games played on Saturday games this season, and 21-10 against ranked opponents in 2001.

CLEMSON NOTES

The Tigers wrapped up Clemson’s 27th NCAA Tournament appearance with the Coral Gables Super Regional. The appearance was Clemson’s 15th consecutive, the third-longest post-season streak in the nation.Clemson head coach Jack Leggett has a 32-27 record in NCAA Tournament action after the Miami series. Leggett is 28-17 in seven tournament appearances at Clemson, where his Tigers teams have made three CWS appearances.
