Coral Gables, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) — – With the postseason set to begin this upcoming weekend, the NCAA release its end of the regular season statistics. Several Hurricanes are listed among the NCAA leaders, as well as the club’s ranking in two team categories.
Leading the nation in stolen bases is shortstop Javy Rodriguez. With 57 steals in 56 games, his 1.06 per game average makes him No. 1 heading into Regionals. Javy Rodriguez is five steals away from tying Orlando Gonzalez (1974) school record of 62 steals in 62 games. The Gulliver Prep graduate has been ranked either No. 1 or 2 for nearly the entire season.
Placing fourth in stolen bases is left fielder Marcus Nettles. Nettles, who was ranked fifth last week, has 42 steals for a 0.86 per game average. Mike Rodriguez, an outfielder from Cooper City, made the biggest impact this past week in the stolen bases as he went from 19th to 7th with his 42 steals and a 0.76 per game average.
The team has stolen 191 bases this season to lead the nation as well. The 191 steals is the most in a single season at Miami since its school-record 230 in 1985. The figure ranks sixth all-time on the school season list.
Moving up from 17th to 12th was pitcher Tom Farmer with his 12-2 record. Farmer, the Ron Fraser Pitcher of the Year Award winner, posted his record with a 3.48 ERA at the No. 3 spot in the starting rotation. The team’s 3.58 ERA places the staff at No. 17.
Freshman closer George Huguet ended the regular season tied for third with his 12 saves. The school freshman record for saves was 14 by Robbie Morrison in 1996.
UM’s 44-12 record ranks eighth in the NCAA, while the Hurricanes current eight-game win streak is the third longest current streak heading into the postseason.
