Coral Gables, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) — – The University of Miami baseball team (44-12) enters the 2001 Coral Gables Regional, May 25-28, as the nation’s consensus No. 1-ranked team by the four collegiate baseball polls.
The Baseball Weekly/ESPN Top 25 College Coaches Poll has had Miami as its No. 1-ranked team for the last three weeks. Baseball America and the NCBWA have had UM No. 1 the last two weeks.
To round out the four, Collegiate Baseball newspaper has bumped the Hurricanes past Southern California into its top spot.
In the final weekend of the regular season, Miami swept a three-game series with New York Tech to solidify its hold on the No. 1 poll ranking.
When the ESPN selection show announced the Hurricanes as the No. 2 national seed in the upcoming Division I Baseball Championship, it marked the second time in the three seasons of the current postseason format the UM has had a national seed. Miami was the No. 1 seed during its championship run in the 1999 season.
