The Hurricanes won five of the six regular season meetings with the Seminoles in 2001, and are the only team to ever sweep FSU in a three-game series at home. Miami also had three-game sweeps of FSU in 1992 and 1998.

With the game tied, 4-4, going into the eighth the Hurricanes recaptured the lead, 7-4, with three runs on three hits and one error. Mike DiRosa led off the inning with a single to right center. Charlton Jimerson struck out swinging on relief pitcher Justin Lord (2-2) for the second out of the inning. Mike Rodriguez came up with an infield single to the shortstop to load the bases. A Lord wild pitch allowed Brown to score from third and move the runners over. Javy Rodriguez then hit a hard grounder threw the third baseman’s legs, which was ruled an error, to score the other two base runners.

T.J. Prunty (1-1) earned the victory when he came out to start the seventh inning in relief of UM starter Tom Farmer, who went 6.0 innings with five hits, four runs (three earned), three walks and two strikeouts. George Huguet recorded his third save of the weekend to give him 11 on the season.

Florida State opened the scoring in the first inning, 1-0, on Nick Rogers double down the left field line that scored John-Ford Griffin from second base. Griffin had led off the inning reaching base on a fielding error by UM first baseman Brown and advanced to second.

The Hurricanes tied the game in the third, 1-1, on Jimerson’s fifth home run of the season, and third of the series, deep to centerfield off FSU starter Trent Peterson.

The Seminoles went ahead in the bottom of the third, 2-1, on Mike Futrell’s sacrifice fly RBI to centerfield that allowed Rogers to tag up from third. Rogers led off the frame with a walk, stole second and advanced to third on Karl Jernigan’s bloop single to left center.

The Hurricane jumped ahead in the fourth, 4-2, with three runs on four hits, one error and two wild pitches. Javy Rodriguez led off the inning with a single to centerfield. He then advanced all the way to third on an errant throw from Peterson on a pick off attempt. Javy Rodriguez tied the game after a Peterson wild pitch. Danny Matienzo followed with a single to left field. Kevin Howard and Kevin Mannix each reached with bloop singles to centerfield to load the bases. Peterson was relieved with Robby Read at that point. Read proceeded to walk DiRosa to score Matienzo. Read then threw a wild ptich to score Howard from third.

FSU tied the game in the bottom of the sixth, 4-4, when Jeff Probst hit a two-run home run over the right field fence on Farmer, also scoring Futrell. Futrell earlier reached on a walk.
