Baseball Hosts Savannah State In Three-Game Series

Coral Gables, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) — – The University of Miami baseball team (25-9), ranked as high as eighth by Baseball America, host Savannah State (28-6) for a three-game series beginning this Friday through Sunday at Mark Light Stadium. Game times are scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.

All three games can be heard over the Internet at hurricanesports.com. UM’s Spanish Broadcast Network on WACC 830 AM Radio Paz with Jerry del Castillo and Pepe Campos will pick-up the Saturday game. All three games can also be heard on the student voice of the Hurricanes, WVUM 90.5 FM.

On the mound for the Hurricanes Friday night will be sophomore right-hander Kiki Bengochea (5-2, 2.88 ERA). Bengochea leads the team with his 50 strikeouts, as well as innings pitched (59.1).

Usual No. 1 starter, junior left-hander Brian Walker, will be taking the series off. Walker leads the team with his 7-1 record. His win total ties him for seventh nationally.

Following Bengochea on Saturday will be junior right-hander Chris Sheffield (2-0, 3.29 ERA). In 27.1 innings pitched this season, Sheffield has recorded 41 strikeouts. Senior Tom Farmer (6-2, 4.17 ERA) will take to the mound on Sunday. Farmer places second with his six victories and third in innings pitched (54.0).

Offensively, UM is led by Marcus Nettles’ .372 batting average, followed by Javy Rodriguez (.370). In addition to his team-high batting average, Nettles leads all starters with a .492 on-base percentage and is second with 27 runs scored and 23 stolen bases. Rodriguez leads the club with 29 stolen bases and 33 RBI and is second with a .513 slugging percentage and 44 hits.

Savannah State enters the series with a 30-6 overall record and with an impressive 19-game win streak. Last season, the Tigers set an NCAA record with 46 consecutive victories.
