Baseball Completes Sweep Of Elon 7-4

Coral Gables, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) — – The University of Miami baseball team (9-2), ranked fourth by Baseball America, completed the three-game sweep of Elon (5-4) with a 7-4 victory in front of 1,374 fans at Mark Light Stadium.

Kevin Mannix and Kevin Brown each hit a home run in the bottom of the fifth to break a 4-4 game, while starter Tom Farmer (2-0) was solid with 7.0 innings with six hits, four runs (two earned), one walk and five strikeouts. Freshman reliever George Huguet closed the final two innings for his first collegiate save.

Elon opened the scoring in the top of the first, 1-0, when Whit Bryant singled down the third base line, scoring Brian Ingram from second on the play. Ingram led off the inning with a single to left center and moved to second on a Ryan McBee fielder’s choice ground out.

The Phoenix extended the score, 2-0, in the third when UM catcher Mike DiRosa was trying to catch Ingram stealing third, but the ball skidded past third baseman Kevin Howard into the outfield allowing Ingram to score. Ingram had earlier reached base on an infield single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from McBee.

Miami came back to take the lead in the third, 4-2, with four runs off five hits on Elon starter Scott Light. Kris Clute started the inning with an infield single towards third base, followed by a Charlton Jimerson single to left field. Javy Rodriguez knocked in the first run of the inning, Clute, with a double to right field. Jimerson then came home from third on a Mike Rodriguez ground out. After Javy Rodriguez stole third, Kevin Mannix then brought him in with an infield single to the shortstop. Mannix stole second, followed by a walk to Haas Pratt. Kevin Howard knocked in the final run of the inning, Mannix, with a single to centerfield.

Elon tied the game in the fifth, 4-4, off one hit and one error. Jason Tuttle started the inning with a single to centerfield. Ingram then reached base on a fielding error by Jimerson in centerfield, allowing runners to go second and third. McBee brought in the first run, Tuttle, with a ground out to second base. Shaun Kopczynski then brought the second run in, Ingram, with another ground out to second.

Miami went back on top, 7-4, on a pair of home runs by Mannix and Kevin Brown. Mannix was the first with a solo home run to left field. With Howard on first, Brown sent a Light pitch deep to right field.

Light left the game following his five innings pitched, allowing nine hits, seven runs (all earned), three walks and seven strikeouts.

Miami returns to action on Wednesday, February 21 at 7 p.m., against Florida International at Mark Light Stadium. UM and FIU will then meet for two more games, each at 7 p.m., on Friday and Saturday, February 23-24, as part of the 2001 Homestead Challenge at the Homestead Sports Complex.
