Coral Gables, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) — – The University of Miami baseball team (2-1) took its series with Florida Atlantic (1-2) after defeating the Owls, 4-2, in the decisive third game at Mark Light Stadium Saturday night.
Miami defeated FAU 9-3 on Thursday night, followed by an FAU win, 11-10, on Friday. The win pushes UM’s record with FAU to 35-6 since the 1982 season.
Closer Luke DeBold earned the save after closing out the final 1.1 innings of work, including two strikeouts in the ninth. Reliever Alex Prendes kept UM ahead in the seventh and eighth after going 1.0 innings with two strikeouts and one hit.
UM starter Tom Farmer (1-0) earned the victory after going 6.0 innings with three hits, two earned runs, three walks and six strikeouts. FAU starter Danny Core (0-1) went the complete game with 8.0 innings, five hits, four runs, two earned runs, four walks and five strikeouts.
UM and FAU had five hits apiece, but the Owls committed four costly turnovers in the loss.
After Farmer retired the side in the top of the first, the Hurricanes put the first run on the scoreboard when shortstop Javy Rodriguez knocked in left fielder Marcus Nettles from third with a fielder’s choice to the second baseman. Nettles led off the inning with a walk, moved to second on a throwing error by Core and took third on a balk.
Third baseman Kevin Howard put Miami ahead, 3-0, in the third with a home run to right center off Core, also scoring Javy Rodriguez on the play. One at bat earlier, Rodriguez reached base with a single to centerfield.
FAU narrowed the lead, 3-2, in the sixth with left fielder Regan Samaniego’s two-run home run deep to right field, also scoring right fielder Tim McNab. McNab earlier reached base on a walk by Farmer.
The Hurricanes added another run in the fourth to go up 4-2 when Howard scored off a botched throwing error by FAU third baseman Dean Devine. Howard led off the inning with a single to right field. Designated hitter Danny Matienzo then hit a single to right center, moving Howard to second. Centerfielder Mike Rodriguez hit a sacrifice bunt which Devine overthrew the first baseman, allowing Howard to score.
The Hurricanes next travel to Gainesville to take on the Florida Gators, February 3-4, at McKethan Stadium. Saturday’s game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. and will be televised by the Sunshine Network, while Sunday’s first pitch is at 1:30 p.m. Both games can be heard on the student voice of the Hurricanes, WVUM 90.5.
