Coral Gables, FL (www.hurricanesports.com) – The University of Miami (35-17-1) opened up its three-game series with New York Tech (17-26-1) with a 6-1 win at Mark Light Stadium on the UM campus.
UM starter Brian Walker (10-2) pitched six innings for his team-high 10th win of the season with seven hits, one earned run, two walks and three strikeouts. New York Tech starter Ben Peterson (3-7) went five innings for the loss, allowing five hits, three earned runs, two walks and three strikeouts. UM relievers Luke DeBold and Ryan Channell combined for two scoreless innings and four strikeouts to set up closer Tom Farmer for the final inning.
New York Tech put up the first run of the game in the top of the second inning when third baseman Steve Lembo scored right fielder Mike Rick from second with a single up the middle. Lembo reached base earlier on a fielder’s choice and moved to second on a ground out by centerfielder Bryan Goelz.
Miami answered in the bottom of the second by taking the lead, 2-1, on Kevin Mannix‘ two-run home deep to left center off Peterson. Mannix’ seventh home run of the season also scored designated hitter Danny Matienzo, who reached base on a walk.
Right fielder Manny Crespo extended UM’s lead, 3-1, in the fourth inning with a solo home run, his ninth of the season, to left field off Peterson.
Mannix knocked in his third run of the game, pinch-runner Marcus Nettles from second, with a double down the left field line in the eighth inning off Tech reliever Rich Roth. Nettles pinch-ran for Matienzo, who reached base with a single to left field. Nettles took second on a balk by Roth.
Later in the eighth inning, first baseman Kevin Brown, in his first start since injuring his left shin March 8 against Michigan State, brought in pinch-runner Charlton Jimerson from second with a double down the left field line. Catcher Mike DiRosa followed up with a double to score Brown for the 6-1 margin.
Miami and New York Tech will continue its three-game series on Saturday, May 20 at 7 p.m. at Mark Light Stadium. The game can be heard on the student voice WVUM 90.5 FM or in Spanish at WACC 830 AM. Fox Sports Net will also carry the game live on television.
