Bengochea Leads USA Past Chinese Taipei 3-1
Aug. 1, 2000
Coral Gables, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – UCLA’s Josh Karp, Miami’s Kiki Bengochea and Cal-State Fullerton’s Kirk Saarloos combined to toss a four-hitter as the USA National Team defeated Chinese Taipei (Taiwan), 3-1, in front of 3,100 fans at Eldredge Park. The victory improved Team USA’s record to 20-3-1 on the 2000 Qwest Red, White and Blue Tour, while Chinese Taipei dropped to 1-8 on its tour of the United States. The Americans have defeated Chinese Taipei in all eight meetings between the teams this summer.
Bengochea came on in relief to start the seventh inning and earned the win to improve to 3-0 this season. The right hander has not allowed an earned run in 17 innings of work this summer. He struck out one in two hitless innings. Karp started and lasted six innings, allowing one unearned run, four hits and a pair of walks while striking out seven batters. Saarloos finished the game with a perfect ninth to pick up his third save.
Georgia Tech’s Mark Teixeira broke a scoreless tie in the fifth with an RBI groundout that allowed Clemson’s Jeff Baker to score the game’s first run. Chinese Taipei tied the score in the sixth by scoring an unearned run on a squeeze bunt. Team USA regained the lead in the eighth inning on RBI singles by Arizona State’s Casey Myers and SW Missouri State’s Ryan Howard to go up 3-1.
Notes: The victory runs Team USA’s unbeaten streak to 14 consecutive games. The National Team tied the Cape Cod All-Stars 2-2 in Chatham, MA, after winning it’s last 12 games. Team USA’s 12-game winning streak ties last season’s longest streak, set July 21 – August 7. The USA National Team’s last loss came in a 2-1 defeat by Korea in Tucson, Ariz. on July 5.
