Baseball Travels To Florida International

March 27, 2000

Coral Gables, FL – The University of Miami baseball team (22-9-1) travel to the Homestead Sports Complex to take on cross-town rival and Florida International (24-8) on Tuesday, March 28 at 7 p.m.

The game will be televised on Fox Sports Net with Florida Marlins broadcaster Jay Randolph and WPLG Channel 10 Sportscaster Frank Forte calling the action. The game can also be heard on the radio on Miami’s flagship station WQAM 560 AM and student radio WVUM 90.5 FM.

The Hurricanes are coming off their 18th consecutive three-game series victory, after taking two of three games from feisty Dartmouth. In the Sunday game against the Big Green, the UM pitching combination of freshman RHP Kiki Bengochea and closer Luke DeBold combined for a one-hitter in the 6-1 Hurricane victory. Leading the team offensively is freshman infielder Kevin Howard, who has a team-best .421 batting average and 40 hits.

Starting on the mound for Miami will be sophomore RHP Troy Roberson (2-0, 1.88 ERA). Roberson took a no-decision in his last outing against Northwestern on March 22, after pitching five solid innings against the Wildcats with four hits, one unearned run, two walks with seven strikeouts. His last win came on March 15 against Iona in his return to the starting rotation. Roberson’s previous last start came at Florida on February 13, when he left the game after 3.1 innings pitched with a sore elbow.

For Florida International, sophomore RHP Peter Kocur (3-1, 4.50 ERA) will take to the mound. Kocur, who teamed with the Hurricanes’ Mike Rodriguez at Cooper City High School, earned his first loss in his last decision at New Orleans on March 12. The Golden Panthers are on a modest-one game win streak after defeating Arkansas State, 13-1, to thwart off a three-game sweep by the Indians. ASU had defeated FIU in two games of a double-header on Saturday. Prior to ASU, FIU lost to Ohio State, 2-0, on March 22.

Miami will meet FIU for the 94th time in the all-time series dating back to the 1973 season, with the Hurricanes holding a 76-17 advantage. Earlier this season, FIU rallied to defeat Miami 7-6 at Mark Light Stadium on March 1.
