Miami Tames The Wolverines, 10-3

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami baseball team (19-8), ranked 13thin the Baseball Weekly/ESPN Coaches’ Poll, used a seven run scoring spree inthe sixth inning to win the second of a three-game series, 10-3, withMichigan (6-8) at Mark Light Stadium on the UM campus.
With the game tied at three apiece going into the bottom of the sixth, UMwent on tear, scoring seven runs. Kris Clute scored the go-ahead on a MikeRodriguez sacrifice fly just before Manny Crespo hit a two RBI single,bringing home Javy Rodriguez and Mike DiRosa. Lale Esquivel followed with aleft field single, driving in two more runs as Crespo and Kevin Howardscored. Danny Matienzo and Esquivel closed the inning with two more runs.For the inning, the ‘Canes recorded seven runs and seven hits.
The Hurricanes opened the scoring when Mike Rodriguez scored on a Matienzosingle after getting a base hit, advancing to second on a Howard sacrificebunt and stealing third. Michigan tied the contest when Bob Bobeda scoredon a fielding error after doubling to left field.
UM recovered the lead in the bottom of the fourth when Klute and KevinMannix advanced to home on a Javy Rodriguez double down the right fieldline. The Wolverines countered in the top of the sixth when Kevin Quinn hita two RBI homer to left field, bringing home Scott Tousa who was on baseafter hitting a single.
The Hurricanes will attempt to capture the third game of the Michigan seriesand complete the sweep at 1 p.m. Sunday at Mark Light Stadium. UM’s studentstation WVUM 90.5 FM will broadcast the series.
