Baseball Travels to No. 24 Florida This Weekend

Feb. 11, 2000

Coral Gables, FL – The Defending National Champion Miami Hurricanes (4-3), ranked No. 7 by Baseball America, travel to No. 24 Florida for two games on Saturday and Sunday, February 12-13, at McKethan Stadium at Perry Field in Gainesville. Saturday’s game, televised by the Sunshine Network, is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. Sunday’s first-pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.

Miami swept Florida in two games at UM’s Mark Light Stadium, 16-8 and 17-1, February 4-5. The sweep extended the Hurricanes’ win streak over the Gators in Coral Gables to 10 games dating back to the 1996 season. On the other hand, Miami will also look to break an eight-game slide to the Gators in Gainesville dating back to that 1996 season.

The 17-1 win over Florida on February 5 marked the largest margin of victory for a UM team over the Gators since the team’s began playing in the 1940 season. The 16-run margin also tied for the second-worse loss in the history of the UF baseball program.

The Hurricanes will start senior ace David Gil (RHP, 1-0, 3.00 ERA) on Saturday with sophomore Troy Roberson (RHP, 1-0, 0.00 ERA) pitching on Sunday.

Gil, a Louisville Slugger Preseason First-Team All-American, enters the game on a 14-game consecutive win streak dating back to the 1998 season. The senior from Miami earned a no decision in his last outing against UF, leaving the game after the fourth inning with UM holding a 5-3 lead.

Roberson earned his first victory of 2000 against UF last weekend in Coral Gables, as the sophomore from Royal Palm Beach pitched five scoreless innings with six strikeouts. On the season, Roberson has pitched 10 scoreless innings with zero walks and 11 strikeouts. Each game will be carried locally on the radio by Hurricane flagship station WQAM 560 AM, with Marc Vandermeer calling the action and Joe Zagacki on analysis. In addition, each game will also be broadcast in Spanish on WACC 830 AM, with Jerry del Castillo and Pepe Campos.
