Baseball's Santos Named Palm Beach County Amateur Athlete of the Year

Coral Gables, FL – Former University of Miami pitcher Alex Santos, who now plays in the Tampa Bay Devil Rays organization, was named Amateur Athlete of the Year by the Palm Beach County Sports Hall of Fame Committee.
Santos, a three-year letterman for the Hurricanes (1997-99), was the pitcher of record in UM’s 6-5 triumph over Florida State for the 1999 College World Series title. He was named an All-American in both of his season’s as UM’s top pitcher (1998-99).
One of the top pitchers all-time at UM, Santos was drafted in the fourth round by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the 1999 MLB Amateur Player Draft. He places second all-time with 386 career strikeouts and sixth and seventh place with 144 (1999) and 142 (1998) single season strikeouts, respectively.
Off the field, Santos was twice honored as a GTE District III Academic All-American. He was also tapped into the University’s Iron Arrow Society, the highest service honor achieved at the school.
