Baseball to hold Intrasquad Scrimmages

Coral Gables, FL – The National Champion University of Miami baseball team will hold two intrasquad four-inning scrimmages this weekend on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at Mark Light Stadium on the UM campus. Admission is free to the public.
The Hurricanes, who opened spring practice on Jan. 3, begin defense of their 1999 College World Series title on Wednesday, Jan. 26 against Lynn University at 7 p.m. at Mark Light Stadium.
1999 National Coach of the Year Jim Morris, who enters the season one win away from his 300th victory at the University of Miami, has a 934-373-1 overall record in 22 seasons as a head coach. In his six seasons at UM, Morris has compiled a 299-88-0 record and has guided the Hurricanes to the College World Series each season, a NCAA record.
In 1999, UM recorded a 50-13 overall record while marching through the postseason with a perfect 9-0 record. The season culminated with No. 1-seeded Miami’s 6-5 victory over No. 2 Florida State for the national title at Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, NE.
Miami is ranked No. 5 in two preseason polls, Collegiate Baseball and Baseball America, and boasts four preseason All-Americans. Senior pitcher David Gil, who went 12-0 in 1999, was selected to Collegiate Baseball newspaper’s first team. Junior right-fielder Manny Crespo, a 1999 CWS All-Tournament Team selection, was picked to Baseball America’s second team, while junior first baseman Kevin Brown was a Baseball America third-team pick. Sophomore relief pitcher Vince Vazquez was also a third-team selection by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers’ Association (NCBWA).
