No. 1 Miami Baseball Blows Past Wake Forest, 8-1

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Witha four-run outburst in the third inning,highlighted by Kevin Brown’s towering three-run blast over the leftfieldscoreboard, the University of Miami defeated No. 9 Wake Forest, 8-1,in theSuper Regional at Mark Light Stadium. The win completes the Hurricanestwo-game sweep of the Demon Deacons to advance to the College WorldSeries inOmaha, NE for the sixth consecutive season under Head Coach Jim Morrisand18th overall in school history.
Miami, seeded No. 1 nationallyin the NCAA Tournament, started thescoring in the top of the first inning as Manny Crespo scored fromsecondbase on a RBI single to left field by Lale Esquivel.
The Hurricanes went on topad their lead with four more runs in thethird inning. Kris Clute led off the inning with a walk, thenstole secondbase. Bobby Hill reached base with a single, moving Clute tothird. Cluteadded UM’s second run off a Brian Seever sacrifice ground out to secondbase.
Two batters later Brown sent a 2-2 pitch over the scoreboardto extend thelead, 5-0. UM made it 6-0 in the fourth off Bobby Hill’s RBIdouble thatscored Mark Walker.
Alex Santos (11-3) receivedthe win for Miami with seven stronginnings, with no walks and five strikeouts. He gave up the DemonDeaconslone run in the bottom of the fifth inning off Scott Daeley’s RBI singlethatscored Chase Voshell. John Hendrix (10-6) received the loss aftergoing fiveinnings, giving up six hits and eight runs — all earned.
The Hurricanes added thefinal two runs in the sixth inning as GregLovelady scored on Hill’s sacrifice fly out followed by Manny Crespo’sRBIsingle to centerfield that scored Walker.
Miami’s return to Omahaextends the NCAA record for Morris, who hastaken the Hurricanes to the College World Series in his first six yearswiththe program. In addition, the six consecutive trips to the WorldSeriesmarks a new UM record for straight trips among their 17 previous visitsto Rosenblatt Stadium.

***Bobby Hill’s stolen base in the third inning marked his 50th stealof the
year. Hill becomes just the fourth player in school history to record50 or
more stolen bases in a season.
***Kevin Brown’s home run marked the 100th homer of the season by the
Hurricanes as a team. It marks just the second time in school historythat
Miami has hit 100 or more home runs. The school record for home runsin a
season is 139 set in 1998.
***With the win, Miami advances to the College World Series for thesixth
consecutive year and the 18th year overall.
***With the win, Head Coach Jim Morris becomes only the third coachin NCAA
history to lead a team to six straight trips to Omaha. Morris joinsGary Ward
(Oklahoma State, 7,1981-1987) and Pete Butler (Northern Colorado, 6,
1957-1962) as the only coaches to this feat. Morris is the only coachin NCAA
history to lead a team to the College World Series in each ofhis first six
years with a program.
***Miami will face the winner of the Rice – Southwestern Louisiana serieson
June 11th or 12th.
***Tonight’s Attendance of 5447 marked a season high. The twoday total for
