THE MATCHUP:

            The University of Miami travels to Northwestern to take on the Wildcats in the ACC-Big 10 Challenge. This will be the first meeting between the teams on the hardwood.

            The Wildcats enter the game with a 3-2 record following a 40-39 win over North Florida on Saturday afternoon.

            Northwestern, which is 3-1 at Welsh-Ryan Arena this season, is led by senior forward Tim Doyle who leads the team in both scoring (11.6 ppg) and assists (4.8 apg), and is tied for the team lead in rebounding (4.8 rpg).

            The Wildcats are allowing just 48.0 points per game this season and lead the Big 10 in assist-to-turnover ration (1.60). They are forcing 15.4 turnovers per game while committing only 9.8 per contest.

            The Hurricanes enter the contest with a 4-2 record following a 98-66 win over Lafayette on Saturday at the BankUnitedCenter.

            Sophomore Jack McClinton recorded his third straight 20-point game with 23 points to led Miami.

            McClinton has scored in double-figures in all six games this season and is averaging a team-high 19.3 points per game. He has been the team’s leading scorer in each of the last five games, and is shooting 55.6 percent (20-36) from three-point range. He currently leads the ACC in three-point field goals made per game (3.33).

            Also averaging in double-figures for the Hurricanes is sophomore Brian Asbury. Asbury ranks second on the team in both scoring (11.0 ppg) and rebounding (6.0 rpg). He scored a career-high 19 points in Miami’s win over Lafayette.

            Senior center Anthony King has been monster on the glass pulling down a team-high 10.2 rebounds per game. King also leads the team in blocks (2.0 bpg). He is the ACC’s leading rebounder.

            Miami’s defense is holding teams to just 38.4 percent shooting from the field.

            Dion Harris had 16 points to lead five players in double figures as Michigan defeated the University of Miami 74-53 in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge in Ann Arbor, Mich.

            The Wolverines pulled away with an 18-3 run, taking a 50-33 lead midway through the second half.

            Guillermo Diaz finished with 21 points, becoming the 28th player in school-history to score 1,000 career points, and Gary Hamilton had nine points and seven rebounds to lead the Hurricanes.

            Michigan’s Lester Abram scored 14, Daniel Horton had 13, Courtney Sims scored 12 and reserve Chris Hunter added 11 points.

            The Wolverines led just 31-26 at halftime after seven ties and five lead changes. The game was closely contested early in the second half before the decisive burst.

            Diaz led a rally with eight straight points for Miami, but Horton made two 3-pointers and an assist to put Michigan ahead 62-42.

            Miami made 19 turnovers, clearly missing point guard Anthony Harris, who is out with an injured right foot. The Wolverines outrebounded the Hurricanes 42-27, getting 18 points on offensive rebounds.

THINGS TO KEEP AN EYE ON:

***With a start against Northwestern, Anthony King will be making his 70th consecutive start marking the fifth longest streak in UM history.

 

***Anthony Harris needs three assists to move into ninth on UM’s all-time list. He enters the game with 255 career assists. Jerome Scott (1988-92) is currently in ninth with 257.

 

***With 20 points against Northwestern, Jack McClinton would become the first Hurricane since Darius Rice in 2002-03 to record four straight 20-point games.

 

THE SERIES:

            Miami and Northwestern will be meeting for the first time in basketball.

 

TV/RADIO:

            The Miami-Northwestern game will be televised live on ESPN2. Terry Gannon will handle the play-by-play duties with Stephen Bardo adding analysis.

            The game can be heard on the Hurricane Radio Network. Joe Zagacki “The Voice of the Hurricanes” will call all the action with Josh Darrow adding analysis. Brian London will serve as studio host. The game will start on WINZ (940 AM) and will move to WQAM (560 AM) at the conclusion of the Florida Panthers game.

 

ON THE COACHES:

            Miami head coach Frank Haith is in his third season with the Hurricanes. His record career record is 38-31 (.551) including a 4-2 mark this season.

            Northwestern head coach Bill Carmody is in his 7th season with the Wildcats and 11th season overall. His record at Northwestern is 85-97 (.467) while his overall record stands at 177-122 (.592).

 

MIAMI vs. THE BIG TEN:

            The University of Miami is 3-14 all-time against Big Ten teams including an 0-6 record on the road.

            Since UM began conference play in 1991-92, the Hurricanes have compiled an 114-54 (.675) record against non-conference opponents, including a 81-17 (.826) mark at home. The Hurricanes are 27-3 (.900) against non-conference opponents at the BankUnitedCenter.

 

STREAKING:

            Anthony King has made 69 consecutive starts for the Hurricanes over the last three seasons tying him for the fifth longest streak in school-history. With a start against Northwestern he will move all alone into fifth ahead of Guillermo Diaz who started 69 straight games from 2003-06.

WINGING IT:

            The University of Miami is long and lean this season. In fact, the Hurricanes have three players with wing spans of at least seven feet. In addition, Miami has four other players with wing spans of 6-11.

A MORE BALANCED ATTACK:

            Miami may only have two players averaging in double-figures but a closer look shows that the Hurricanes’ offense has been more balanced than last season. In four of Miami’s six games this season the Hurricanes have had four players in double-figures including one game with five scoring 10-or-more. In 34 games last season the Hurricanes had a total of six games with four scoring in double-figures including one with five.

 

TAKING IT INSIDE:

            The Hurricanes have made an effort to score in the paint this season. In four of six games this season Miami has recorded 38-or-more points in the paint, and are 4-0 in those games. Last season Miami scored 35-or-more points in the paint only three times. Miami is averaging 36.17 points per game in the paint so far this season compared to 26.38 points per game last season.

 

BIG OFF THE BENCH:

            In its won over Lafayette Miami received 46 points from its bench marking the most bench points since February 8, 1994 when the Hurricanes scored 47 bench points in a 78-63 loss at St. John’s. Miami averaging 23.3 points per game off the bench this season compared to 12.9 last season.

 

CAN YOU SAY UNSELFISH:

            In Miami’s win over AlcornState the Hurricanes recorded 28 assists on 34 baskets. The 28 assists are the second highest total in school history and just one shy of the school record of 29 set against Lehigh on January 9, 1991. Overall the Hurricanes’ assists numbers are up from last season. Last season UM assisted on 11.73 baskets compared to 15.83 this season.

            Senior Anthony Harris has recorded 255 career assists which ranks 10th all-time at Miami. Harris needs three assists to move into ninth-place.

OFFENSIVELY SPEAKING:

            Since the 1998-99 season the Hurricanes are 45-4 (.917) when shooting 50 percent or better from the field. Miami is 11-0 when shooting 50 percent or better under head coach Frank Haith. Miami’s last loss when shooting over 50 percent was January 10, 2004 against Pittsburgh. That night the Panthers defeated the Hurricanes 84-80 in 2OT despite a 50.8 percent shooting performance by UM.
