Former Hurricanes RHP Alex McFarlane Promoted to Phillies

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Former Miami Hurricanes right-handed pitcher Alex McFarlane has been called up by the Philadelphia Phillies and is set to make his Major League debut Friday night against the Atlanta Braves.

McFarlane becomes the 72nd Miami Hurricane to make it to the major leagues, and the fourth player in two years.

The Phillies recalled the 2022 fourth-round MLB Draft pick from Double-A Reading on Friday ahead of a three-game series against the Atlanta Braves and will wear No. 71.

During his time at Miami, McFarlane made 22 appearances on the mound across the 2020 and 2021 seasons. As a freshman in 2021, he went 2-1 with a 4.50 ERA over 34.0 innings, striking out 38 batters while holding opponents to a .238 batting average. He also made six appearances during the shortened 2020 campaign, totaling 14 strikeouts in 12.0 innings.

In seven appearances with Double-A Reading this season, McFarlane has allowed just one run over 6.1 innings while recording one save. He has struck out 10 batters and limited opponents to a .190 batting average. McFarlane also impressed during this past spring training with Philadelphia, tossing three scoreless innings and holding hitters to one hit in nine at-bats.

During the 2025 season, McFarlane earned the organization’s Minor League Pitcher of the Month honors for July after allowing four runs across 17 innings in four starts with High-A Jersey Shore.
