MBB Adds DePaul Transfer Charlie Moore
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami head men’s basketball coach Jim Larrañaga announced Friday the signing of Charlie Moore.
A 5-foot-11, 180-pound guard, Moore spent the last two seasons at DePaul University, where he earned Preseason First Team All-BIG EAST accolades in 2020-21.
“We’re happy to welcome Charlie and his family into the Miami basketball program,” Larrañaga said. “Charlie is a playmaking point guard who has the ability to score, as well as create for his teammates. He possesses the speed and quickness to get where he wants on the floor. In addition, he is a hard worker who will provide a veteran presence in the locker room.”
Moore played in 48 of 51 contests over his two years with the Blue Demons, earning 47 starts. He averaged 15.1 points, 5.5 assists, 3.4 rebounds and 1.4 steals in 34.7 minutes per game. Moore scored in double figures on 34 occasions, including notching 20-plus 16 times, and tallied at least eight assists in 13 outings.
In the most recent season, Moore averaged 14.4 points, 4.2 assists and a career-best 3.6 rebounds per game. He also shot 34.6 percent from 3-point range during the 2020-21 campaign.
The Chicago native posted his finest season as a redshirt junior in 2019-20, averaging 15.5 points and 6.1 assists per game. Moore reached 20 points in 10 affairs, logging 25-plus points in four of them. He had five appearances with double-digit assists and four double-doubles.
Moore spent the 2018-19 season at Kansas, where he helped the team to a 26-10 record and top-20 year-end Associated Press ranking. He played in 31 contests for the Jayhawks, averaging 2.9 points per game, after sitting out the prior year as a transfer.
Following his graduation from Morgan Park (Ill.) High School, Moore matriculated to California. He started all 34 outings for the 21-win Golden Bears in 2016-17, while averaging 12.2 points and 3.5 assists per game, en route to Pac-12 All-Freshman Honorable Mention status. Moore burst onto the scene in his second game, registering a career-best 38 points—the Cal freshman scoring record—in an overtime victory against UC Irvine.
A two-time 3A state champion and consensus four-star prospect at the prep level, Moore placed No. 55 in Rivals’ 2016 recruiting rankings. The top player in Illinois according to all major recruiting outlets, Moore earned Illinois Mr. Basketball and Chicago Sun-Times Player of the Year after averaging 28.0 points, 7.0 assists and 4.0 steals per game as a senior in 2015-16.
Moore will join the Hurricanes for the 2021-22 campaign with one season of collegiate eligibility left. He is the fourth newcomer Miami has signed, joining high school guards Nisine Poplar and Jakai Robinson, both of whom inked in November, and George Mason transfer Jordan Miller.
