W. Tennis Rolls on Day Two of Miami Spring Invite

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team turned in another stellar performance Sunday at the Miami Spring Invite.

After going 1-2 in doubles against No. 10 Vanderbilt, including notching a top-15 win, No. 23 Miami cruised to a 5-1 ledger versus Northwestern in singles play at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.

“I was super happy with some of the adjustments we made today going into both singles and doubles, actually,” Miami head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. “. . . Did an unbelievable job [in singles]. Made those moves to the wide balls, we were a little tougher, more resilient [and a] little more hard-working today, which is where we have to be and that’s something that we’re focusing on right now.
And I thought they did a great job today.”

To start the morning, sophomore Daevenia Achong and freshman Selma Cadar logged an impressive victory in dominant fashion. The duo defeated No. 12 Georgia Drummy and Christina Rosca, 6-2, in the highest-ranked win of 2019-20 by a Miami duo and the first ranked doubles triumph of Cadar’s career.

Senior Estela Perez-Somarriba and freshman Maya Tahan fell to Emma Kurtz and Anna Ross, 2-6, while senior Yuna Ito and freshman Florencia Urrutia dropped a 5-7 decision to Dasha Kourkina.

“[Yuna and Florencia] played a little timid there at 5-3 up at three doubles, so we need to make another adjustment again tomorrow,” Yaroshuk-Tews said. “But we talked about making some moves that I saw in doubles. Playing with partners that you haven’t played with, it’s not easy. And playing against a solid team like Vandy in doubles, they make you uncomfortable. I think we did a great job.”

To begin singles action, Tahan made quick work of Clarissa Hand, a former top-100 player, earning a 6-3, 6-1 victory. Third-ranked Perez-Somarriba then rolled past Julie Byrne, 6-1, 6-1.

Achong held off a late rally from Inci Ogut, breaking at 5-4, deuce-point to record a 6-2, 6-4 decision. Urrutia tacked on another victory for the Hurricanes by edging Christina Hand, 6-4, 6-3.

After freshman Nada Dimovska dropped a hard-fought 6-7 (2-7), 3-6 result to Briana Crowley, Ito ended the day in style with a 7-5, 6-0 victory against Hannah McColgan.

Additionally, freshman Diana Khodan also played an exhibition set against Oklahoma’s Skyler Miller and narrowly earned a 7-6 (7-2) triumph.

Through the first two days of the event, the Hurricanes boast a stellar 10-3 record in official singles competition.

Action on the final day of the Miami Spring Invite begins Monday at 9 a.m., with the Hurricanes meeting Oklahoma in doubles.
