W. Tennis Impresses in Singles at Miami Spring Invite

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team opened its 2020 home season Saturday at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
 
No. 23 Miami posted a 6-4 overall record, including a 5-2 ledger in singles, on the first day of action in the Miami Spring Invite. Third-ranked Estela Perez-Somarriba and sophomore Daevenia Achong led the way for the Hurricanes, notching victories in both singles and doubles.
 
“We have a lot of new faces this spring, but I thought we got [the year] off to a good start, particularly in singles,” Miami head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. “We have to get better in doubles, but all-in-all, it was a good first day.”
 
The Hurricanes opened the day with three doubles competitions against Northwestern, with Achong and Perez-Somarriba blanked the Wildcats’ pair of Christina Hand and Clarissa Hand, 6-0, in dominating fashion.
 
Meanwhile, competing on court two, freshmen Selma Cadar and Maya Tahan came up short against Julie Byrne and Hannah McColgan, 3-6, while freshman Nada Dimovska and senior Yuna Ito fell against Briana Crowley and Inci Ogut, 2-6.
 
Jumpstarting a strong team performance against Oklahoma in singles, Perez-Somarriba quickly took care of business in her 83rd-career match versus a ranked opponents.
 
Battling No. 87 Martina Capurro, the Miami senior improved to 68-15 against ranked foes, earning a 6-3, 6-3 ledger.
 
Shortly therafter, Tahan opened her collegiate career with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Camila Romero.
 
Facing Oleksandra Korashvili, Aching collected a hard-fought opening set win, 7-5, before dropping the second set, 4-6. The Geleen, Netherlands, native quickly bounced back with a dominating third set, claiming the overall match 7-5, 4-6, 6-1.
 
Ito followed suit later in the afternoon with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Kianah Motosono, while Florencia Urrutia, making her collegiate debut, fought back to take down Jasmine Asghar.
 
After dropping the opening set, 2-6, Urrutia quickly bounced back and forced a third set with a 6-4 second triumph. In the final set, the Santa Fe, Argentina, native secured her first victory at Miami, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
 
In a back-and-forth battle with Marcelina Podinska, Dimovska came up short, 7-5, 3-6, 4-6, while No. 69 Cadar fell against Carmen Corley, 2-6, 2-6.
 
Miami will resume play Sunday at 8 a.m. when it meets No. 10 Vanderbilt in doubles. The Hurricanes then face Northwestern in singles immediately after.
